Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

Thanks for all of the kind notes and for even looking at these pictures. I may never start another thread - lol.

For every three coats of clear, at least two were sanded off. The lacquer I used was very thin, dried quickly, and could be sanded a couple of times each day. Makes a lot of dust. Sanding grits varied from 320 to 400 to 800.

The flash obscured the serial number but it was inked on with a grocery store counter. I made up a serial number and set the counter after making several stamps on paper to be sure the tool was inked up. I was going to use the year of my birth but instead I used my birthday for the last four digits as there is a real 9 1951, the burst that sold at the Skinner Auction for BIG bucks about eighteen months ago. So far, the REAL 9 12XX hasn't shown up yet in the Burst Serial Registry which makes this the real one. (Yeah, right!!!!)

This picture doesn't look a lot different than the last view like this but the clear is building up and the finish is getting smoother with each sanding.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

Wet sanded. I started with 1000, then 1500, and finished with 2000 grit. I got the paper at AutoZone. They had five pieces of each in package for under ten bucks. More than enough paper when used with the Formby's Olde English.

Buffed and drilled for the bridge. The tailpiece studs were mounted before any color or stain went on.

From the other side. The tenon and control cable routs are clearly visible.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

Headstock bushings in place. I used single line Klusons I got from an eBay seller, PottBelly2000.

Bridge and tailpiece installed. I used Pigtail Musics Standard Set. Incredible parts!

Just about done. Seymour Duncan Antiquities.

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

Strung, lined up, intonated and all that. Just have to put the guard on. The switch ring is from a 60's Les Paul.

The proud papa. All done. Played it through the Marshall in the corner of the picture for the first time.

Since these pictures were taken last summer I've played it quite a bit. Changed the rings to All Parts aged rings and added Buzzy's Replica Guard in place of the Historic Guard in the pictures. It's had one line up when the weather changed in November but other than that it's been a very stable guitar, and stays in tune. It weighs just under nine pounds. I usually play through a Fender Blues Junior and a Fender Blues DeVille linked with a Morley A/B box. The Blues Junior has the gain up, the Blues DeVille is clean. The only effect I use is a cord; the amps do the rest.

That's it. Thanks for looking at the pictures and all of the comments.

Here's another sound clip. Played it at a volume I use when my wife isn't home. Funny how that little red light affects what little ability I have.

I was around when TR was building this bad boy. He is a man with incredible patience and a superb eye for detail.

I did not know he posted all of this and really, the pics don't do any justice to the finished product.

Well done Shortimer!!!

Re: My '59 Les Paul Replica

really enjoyed that Tom. Can you give me some pointers for scraping the headstock logo. I've tried lots of things. Frisket paper has worked the best for me, but every time I try to scrape the logo I get scratches on the pearl, and not a perfect edge.

I used a Stanley utility knife blade and held it at an angle to get as much blade as opposed to point on the letters of the logo as I could. I took my time and scraped very gently and very steadily. The headstock had to be lighted/angled so you could see the letters through the black. It was similar to the way I held the blade to scrape the binding. Like anything, A NEW blade works wonders and they get dull really fast at the tip ends.

What's the matter, Nick...your headstock logo too small for ya? You should try scraping one of these!

Here is a trick. just use 2 small drops of superglue and glue another logo on top of the inlaid logo.

Spray the black, and then pop off the extra logo with a razor blade. you sill have some scraping to do but it is minimal.

Cheers
Roman
