Re: how do i build a guitar
well building a guitar for me began for the lack of $$$ as a child & I would build plywood bodies & add scavenged necks. As I bought hundreds of guitars the first thing i do would be tear it apart, There was no guitar that i didn't see where some kind of improvement could be made. Most learning was trial & error & i would get all the books that i could & then Stew - Mac was a big push forward for parts . I progressed to doing my own designs & experimental models. I moved on to signing up at local continuing education classes where you can use the schools workshop & let me tell you the big tools make things much easier & faster , Now days I do mostly restoration & design , blueprinting & subout the work to very talented & more equipped people

Re: how do i build a guitar
First, you gotta find a tree.
Not just any tree. Maple, Mahogany, Ash, Alder, Poplar....wait, are you wanting to build an acoustic or an electric guitar? Cedar is pretty common in acoustics but seldom seen in electrics. Come to think of it, no matter what kind you want to build, you're gonna need a couple of different tree types. Rosewood is used extensively for fretboards on either type of guitar. Ebony, too. Oh, crap...... You're not talking about a building a bass guitar are you? Bass guitars are, of course only built from the bottom of trees. You can't get that chest pounding THUMP out of anything but the bottom. I guess to be covered, you're gonna need to decide what kind of guitar you want to build, then plant a tree(s) accordingly. |

And just to clarify, don't plant a bent tree. Your grain will be all over the place.

Re: how do i build a guitar
I built a guitar out of a Cigar box as well (Cuban - legal up here in the great white north)...I used a stew-mac rosewood fretboard and some other economy parts and put a tele neck pickup about where the middle pickup on a strat would be....now I'm looking for parts to make a Cigar box bass......I think the Cigar box way is a good way to start.....and if it doesn't turn out perfect it adds to the character of a folk-style instrument.......btw My cigar box sounds awesome in open G and is a 6 string....

Re: how do i build a guitar
The box was given to me by someone here who can afford the full boxes......I find that it's more cost effective to buy empty boxes from shops rather than smoking the whole box...The box I used, if full, would be over $900....not a typo....and an empty box is like 5 -10......I enjoy a cigar occasionally and I do keep the rings and tubes of the ones I smoke.......the tubes do not make good slides
