Soon to be started Fix
This copy (or so I believe) LP lost its head. I'm going to try repairing it once I get the fretboard removed. I plan on removing the truss rod, cutting a long scarf before the crack, making another scarf on a new piece, gluing it and then planing it. Seems like the wrong way to do it but I'm up for a challenge. I already tried heating up the fretboard to loosen it but no luck so far. I'll have to try harder.

i actually have a similar project im starting soon as well. i picked up a Parker P36 with a snapped neck. gonna see what i can do. how exactly do you remove the fingerboard? does it matter what kind of glue was used to put it together? good luck on your fix! _Nelson_

Re: Soon to be started Fix
Hmmm, I havent thought of a headless LP.
I'll definately get photos of it , but I just started building a neck for an SG copy I'm making. I'm hoping to go back and forth and mix it up. a little fixing a little making. I read from the other guitar forum that you can heat up the fetboard with an iron to loosen up the glue then slide a thin spatula under it to seperate it. I tried it and it didnt give at all ,so I'm thinking I may have to remove all the frets to get on top of the wood. I really didnt want to do that. |

Re: Soon to be started Fix
I started taking the fingerboard off and I hope I never have to do this again. This just didnt work out too good for me. I removed all the frets so I can get closer to the wood with the iron because it wasnt giving a bit with them on. Then the iron started melting the binding. eventually I got it off. I'll have to cut the neck down a little shorter than I planned. I ruined my wifes iron also. Now I just have to figure how to get that truss rod out. Any tips??

Re: Soon to be started Fix
Well I just realized, I was in such a rush to get that fingerboard off that I never took the time to measure the scale length. Now I have no clue as to what it was and what to put on

Re: Soon to be started Fix
lookin' good so far. the fingerboard seemed to come off alright with that method. what tools/process did you use to remove the frets? did they come off pretty clean?

Re: Soon to be started Fix
Well, the iron worked part of the way. I took take a paint scraper and tried to wiggle it under the seam. Then I noticed the inlays were falling apart. The binding came off good and left a nice lip to guide the scraper. I ended up going in on an angle and was taking off some neck wood which I tried to avoid. The first fret cracked off at the slot. So about halfway down I ditched the iron, cracked off a few more frets and went berserk. I took a sharp chisel and put it just above the neck on the fingerboard and gave it a sharp whack towards the last fret. I was able to cleanly pop off all the frets that way in 5 minutes. (I know ,this is probably all wrong)Then I just worked the chisel like a plane, paring down the fretboard. If it wasnt for the truss rod I would have used a block plane. I tried again today to lift out the truss rod but it doesnt budge. I have no clue how its installed. Oh yeah, check out Ceska 's post about how he did it. They must have better irons in Finland because it worked great for him.

Re: Soon to be started Fix
Its been a while, too many projects going on, but I started again on the neck. If this doesnt turn out well, then at least I'll get some experience trying to fix a guitar. This is the first attempt at something like this. I made the scarf joint on the guitar with a hand plane. I kept taking light shavings to get the angle I wanted. Then I took a hand saw to the mahogany blank and cut the matching angle and cleaned it up with a plane. Then glue and clamps. (Sorry for the link), the recent pics are at the bottom.

Re: Soon to be started Fix
If this neck snaps in half like the original break did, then I might consider that new neck option as a learning experience too. If this was a real gibson, it would have gone to the repair shop. (and the guy who gave it to me probably would have kept it). I'm going to play around with this, it may be a waste of time but its still fun. I ordered a 25" scale fretboard from stewmac. I want to try mixing it up. I may try a 6 tuner on one side headstock too.
