chambered or semi-hollow?
I'd like some opinions from those with experience... what advantage does each one have, and what would be your recommendation? Are the tonal qualities similar, all other things being equal?

Re: chambered or semi-hollow?
from my experence...tonal qualities are not similar at all
also, it depends a lot on what simi you are talking about..... let me assume 335... the new standard (chambered) LP is a bit bright with a nice acousticness.... my first impression when I played one was "this is not an LP"...now the guy who told me to play it was a tele guy (we both have that in common) and he said that it was the only LP he really liked...I told him "it is not an LP in my mind" now, a 335 is much richer (warm in the lower mids to mids) and has a type of bite to it...not so much a (high eq range) pick attack but something that makes each note ariticulate...very bluesy, very jazz, very cool recommendation is what is going to work best for you....the chambered I played was very nice...but, I would love to own a 335 (and many other guitars)

Re: chambered or semi-hollow?
I have an Ibby AS-50 (335 clone), it's a great sounding guitar, but I need something with faster action. I've heard about LPs being boat anchors, and my LP Triumph bass would seem to confirm that.
Basically, I was speaking of similar materials and dimensions between chambered, solid and semi-hollow. To characterize what I'm looking for: I need something with a "woman-tone goes to college" (e.g., warm, articulate, open) sound, but smaller size than the 335. I cover a lot of ground, and play everything from blues and jazz to R&B and rock... and I need it to reflect my own personality for my original tunes. |
