Re: Designing a new Single Cut is a PITA!

Regarding single-cuts, look at it like this... You can only deviate so much before it's not a single-cut anymore. Staying within the realms and definition of what a single-cut is, you create a shape that you like. Look around and you might find a few other guys that make a single-cut with a similar, maybe even too-similar profile. Fine. Maybe yours is overall bigger or smaller. Also fine. Chances are, you're not going to put the same pickguard on yours as the other guy(s). Maybe yours has a carved top, the similar ones don't. Chances are, you might also prefer to use some different hardware, woods, bindings, finish, etc.. The end user will determine if yours is the one they want over the similar designs.

Re: Designing a new Single Cut is a PITA!

Paul you're absolutely right. Both designs on the table right now are unique and are not copies directly of any one particular thing but it is such treaded water that its tough not to draw similarities over certain aspects.

That being said, I'm always amazed how many people come up to me and say "Wow your Daylighter is a lot like (something completely different than I ever thought)..."

FWIW, I've never thought your Daylighter looked like any other guitar. It looks like a complete original to me.

Re: Designing a new Single Cut is a PITA!

I guess we are too used to see the classics and it's hard to imagine something outside of that, or think outside the box. I'm sure people thought that everything was done until PRS or Parker guitars were made. I'm sure most of us think that in music it's pretty much everything done, but hopefuly a new Hendrix or Cobain will come along and turn the table (god let it be soon..).

I think that you should start avoiding the pre-concept, like "I'll make a modified lester" and just start from scratch, design a fresh guitar and then you can slowly take it to where you like it.

I've had all kinds of bright ideas and by the time I've looked at my sketch more than once I've scrapped them due to fugglyness.

Even the Daylighter is influenced by existing designs! But hey ... I think it doesn't matter! One has to do what one like, add some brand specific details and creative ideas and as long as it looks good and sells well ...

I know it's great to come up with own, original ideas but (let me use this foolish example) one can only write words with the existing letters, right?

I saw that Music Radar described your Daylighter had "the offset lines of the Jaguar" I had never even considered the two similar, and my reaction was essentially.

Re: Designing a new Single Cut is a PITA!

Don't feel bad. I designed a style that is a cross between a tele and a les paul, but when I settled on a design a while back I saw Bartlett had built one that looked just like it. Bah. I am not trying to sell any so I guess that is my only relief. Looking forward to your new style. The day lighter has really grown on me. JR

Sure, it's original and unique, yet a little too square-edged for my taste.
Also the neck seems a little short.

Greatest. Photoshop. Ever. LOL seriously!

Ok it's not an LP, it didn't even start as one but it absolutely has Daylighter DNA and enough single cut to make mop members happy I think.

Now the bad news... I'm not sharing till I release it at namm in jan.
