Question Cover plates

Hi everybody!

This is my first post to this fantastic forum, I have been lurking here for a while now and plan to build my own LP this summer.

Offcourse I will post the progress once started, but now I am ordering parts, creating my own drawings, creating templates and buying the necessary tools.

I have a question about the covers that close the control and pickup switch cavities. I ordered covers online, but they do not match the Catto and Bartlett plans and also do not fit my R8 historic. I assumed all these covers where the same, but that would only be logical . The historic covers do seem to fit with the Bartlett plans...

Since the 'official gibson webshop' doesn't sell the covers (not available at this moment), I was hoping you guys could point me to some (online) shops to buy proper covers (that also fit a historic?). I don't want to order a new set and again come to the conclusion that they won't fit my templates...

The alternative is adjusting my templates to the new covers, but I'd rather stick to the drawings and buy a new set instead of adjusting everything...

Thanks in advance!

Re: Cover plates

Buy a pickguard blank and make them..... it will seem like a walk in the park after building the whole guitar, or better still make them from ebony or stained rosewood..

+1

You can make them fit exactly, while production covers might have a slight deviation in size.

Re: Cover plates

I make my covers out of scrap aluminum from the sheet metal shop. I make my templates for the body cuts and then make the covers using the same templates.

Re: Cover plates

welcome to the forum AND to the world of Luthiery..

You just ran into PROBLEM NUMBER 1. there is No standardization of parts in this world.

which is why all guitars are still somewhat "handmade" in nature.

before your done. you will become intimately familar with working in and the specs for...

wood, plastic, metal, pearl, bone, brass, aluminum, zinc, copper, Lead, ABS, Celluloid, Nitrocelluose, and or poly paints, buffing compounds, sand papers, & glues of every type and chemical composition.

guitar building is one of the most all inclusive hobbies ever devised.

Re: Cover plates

Thank you for your replies!

I guess it should indeed be a piece of cake if I attempt to build a complete guitar. I think I will make my own covers indeed. Gobig2000: do you have pictures of ebony or stained rosewood covers on a LP?

As for the many disciplines involved...
That's one of the reasons I want to build my own guitar. The result is not the only goal, learning a lot of skills is as much a goal as building the guitar itself. I guess for the money involved, I could easily buy a nice guitar !

Re: Cover plates

Since you are still collecting parts, why not make the cavity opening fit the plates you have chosen?
