Re: Rattle Can Lacquer Shoot Out

I agree with your assessment 100%. I have used both.

In addition, I also like to use Preval units to spray the solvent based aniline dyes... and clear as well.

I've done several finishes with re-ranch and had very good results. I'll vouch for it too. Not saying I don't like Stew-Mac's cans, never tried them.

For me, this is the right stuff:

And, I can get it locally at Lowes for $6 a can!

Their ColorTone came out nice but I wanted to open the damn can to add more solvent and raise the pressure the whole way through squirting it.

I used Deft and Gracie's as well in the course of this... The end results of the finishes didn't compare.

Although the Deft did shoot really nicely it was loaded very light... Dried damn quick too.

Re: Rattle Can Lacquer Shoot Out

I've only used the stew mc stuff once, though I do have a can of amber and one of cherry for future use when I try my hand a bursting again.

I use Minwax for the clear coat and consistantly get good resaults.Although I wish it went on thicker.

It doesn't go on thick.

It doesn't say that it is on the can, or on their site. An other member (can't remember the name) said he contacted the company and they stated it was nytro but it doesn't say that on the can either.

Re: Rattle Can Lacquer Shoot Out

I like the preval system personally. It shoots about the same as rattle cans, it helps if you have the jar and air slightly warmed in say a hot water bath, although here in Az it was less of a problem let it sit in the sun for a few minutes, but it lets you mix whatever you like. I got a reasonable looking cherry lacquer using red and a drop of black Mixol with some Deft. I like Deft, it did take a while to really dry, 1 month and it was dry, but it was more like the second month that I got a decent buff out of it where it was REALLY dry, then again we're talking a hand buff, had I some machinery I might have gotten better results at the 1 month area. I think with a bit of experimentation it could be better. I may try the minwax lacquer, mohawk, behlen or a few others. I will be using the Preval again though, for 6 bux for the jar and air and air for 4 bux apiece I can't complain. I have several jars now and its easy to change jars for doing burst and such. Just my 2 centavo's, but rattle cans work fine too, and I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

Regards,

Don

+1 on ReRanch. I did a Shoreline Gold on a Tele and headstock. Awesome stuff. I will never buy elsewhere.

Doesn't RR use Mohawk lacquer now and isn't ColorTone Behlens lacquer which is made by Mohawk?

Don't know where they get their base but the the cans and the load are most definitely beyond any doubt different.

Re: Rattle Can Lacquer Shoot Out

Daniel - Just to confirm, did you heat your SM cans before spraying?

I've only used the SM on my first build so I don't have anything to compare. I heated mine in hot water for 20 min before every coat. Never had sputtering problems. My only complaint would be it takes a lot of coats to build up. That may be a can vs. air gun issue though.

went looking for this as we can get minwax products down here closest I found was the brushing lacquer.
tech info sheet lists it as being nitro
Quote:
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Resin Type: Nitrocellulose, Coconut Alkyd
Solvent: n-Butanol, Xylene, Methyl n-Amyl Ketone,
Di-isobutyl Ketone, n-Butyl Acetate, Acetone
http://www.globak.com.au/uploadimage...2012103115.pdf
you can freely buy clear acrylic lacquer in spraycans here from auto parts stores and in tins but a sprayable nitro can? never seen one for years.

I disagree with you both. I have used both as well and found that the reason you liked ReRanch is the reason I like Colortone.

To be honest with you... My SG I painted with Rustoleum was the easiest to work with.

Only had to warm up the ColorTone to stop the sputtering... 16 out of 17 cans on 3 separate projects... These were all shot at a steady ambient temp of 78 degrees as well.

No issue with the the RR under the same conditions.

hmmm..

Well I think I'm going lean towards your results as you have used more cans than I have to compare. Plus your result look a hell a lot better than mine..

What dyes do you recommend?

As in Aniline dyes for wood or for tinting lacquer?

At any rate I use the stuff from Luthiers Mercantile International, Inc. Guitar Builder Wood and Supplies for both...

I prefer water based for dying wood because even though it raises the grain it grabs slower and I hate the pressure of having to work fast.
