That's really pretty, TKO. However, it doesn't look like it's a very comfortable neck
to play. Oh well, to each his/her own I suppose......

Wait 'till he puts the dog collar studs on the side. This one is going to be called the 'palm ripper'.

Re: check out this neck

Very pretty!

Are you going to use any kind of reinforcement rods? I'm not one to trust figured maple for necks without either laminating it or using graphite rods. If it's quartersawn, I'd be less worried about it moving around, of course.

Won't the truss rod be enough?

Re: check out this neck

A truss rod will of course help, but figured maple is more prone to movement and twisting than the non figured variety. Being quartersawn is definitely a plus.

How long have you had the billet? I would let it sit for a week and see if it moves at all if your nervous about it.

The customer picked it up a while ago. I'm using wood he chose. I had no say in it. If it were me I would've went with a three piece maple neck, but there ya go.

Installing carbon rods in the neck for good measure.

Luthier Boris Dommenget installs those for tonal reasons, too. He swears they add sustain and improve resonance.

Re: check out this neck

The Fender community seems to use a lot of flame maple in they're necks (even seen some custom shop stuff use it, not just boutique builders), I haven't heard of a problem with them? Won't say its not possible, I respect Sully's opinion though, although the stuff is so darn hard you could clobber someone with the stuff and probably kill them and not break it...

Regards,

Don

Ps: Probably didn't get that at Home depot eh?

Carbon fiber rods can add sustain by stiffening the neck. If doing this the sizing of the channels in relationship to the rod is important. You want what is called in the machining field as a tight slip fit. In other words the rod will not fall easly into the channel but needs only minor press pressure to get it to go in. This majorly stiffen the neck and will also reinforce it aginst twist or bow. just very little Epoxy is required to secure the rods.
Knarbens and j.six like this.

Quartersawn is going to be more stable than flatsawn, for sure, but I doubt that Fender is going to go out of their way to get figured quartersawn neck blanks. I’d figure that the clear coats help stabilize the wood as well, but personally, I’m not a fan of cleared necks. I’ve seen a couple of highly figured Fender necks that were pretty, but unplayable (one birdseye, one flame). Granted, even though something is susceptible to twisting doesn't guarantee that it will happen, but you may find that you need to adjust the truss rod more often with a figured neck than one that didn’t have figuring in it.

As with anything, your mileage may vary.
