How to get a Gib... style Logo in the headstock?

Hi,
dont know if I didn't search the Board enough but I could not find something about getting a logo in the headstock. I always sprayed them before. So what do I have to do? I use a black Vulkanfiber veneer. Do i have to rout as close to the logo as possible? I remember that I somewhere read that it would be enough to rout a rectangle and fill all the gabs with black ca.
Any ideas or links?
Thank you
Lars

Re: How to get a Gib... style Logo in the headstock?

Ther are several build post that show both ways. What I reccomend as the right way to get a Gibson logo inlay in your pegheas is to..........buy a Gibson Soor could not resist based on my opinion on non Gibsons with Gison logos.

now for the best help. ditch the fish paper (black fiber board) and use holly. rout out the cavity glue the logo in with black CA. After the CA has had a day to harden level sand with 220p through 400p (the 400p is just to take the courser scratches out of the MOP) the spray 2 black coats of Nitro followed by 3-4 clear coats. allowing a couple days to harden the lightly level. If needed add a couple more clear coats.

Classic Gibsons used Holly. I know they did use fish paper for a while on the Deluxe models but I think they quit that.

Being someone tht love to inlay I prefer exact channeling of frespace channeling but that is just my thing

Hey Gator, one detail I've been curious about is during the application of black nitro, what is the preferred method to mask off the inlay?

I've heard that most simply scrape it clean once the lacquer dries.

Others have had success by sticking a second inlay on top of the fixed one. Once you finish the black layers, remove the top inlay and that will eliminate a lot of the scraping.

I like to use a liquid masking agent that is designed originally for watercolor artists. ther are several brand names but it is basicly gum in liquid solution. I use a ver small fine chisel point burush to apply liberaly, allow to dry over night theen use a #11 exacto to clean up the edges. Once finished spraying the black I come back with #11 exacto and break any paint that is bonded to the gum right at the edge of the shell. the peal the gum off.

You know, I'd never thought of that even though I'd used it many times before when airbrushing. Will definitely try it out on my next build.

Thanks Gator

I used to use something similar for masking model car bodies windows, they're then sprayed on the inside since the bodies are clear. I'll have to look for more of that some where down the road when i get to that point. Thanks for jogging my memory on that stuff. For cars like on chrome I just used vaseline but that might be a little sloppy on a smaller piece like an inlay.

Regards,

Don
