Never do this if you plan on spending less than half an hour.

Re: This is Sparta!
Weekend!
It's been a while when I had a chance to spend some time uninterrupted at the workshop. The guitar is still waiting in the closet, but luckily I have something else to do meanwhile. I started the session with some work on my new workbench project, but got tired after raw cutting all the mortises. As I still had some time, I started the case. Some plywood on my trusted (and battered and really, really shaky) Workmate. I measured the bottom, end pieces and sides and told my Japanese friend to get onto it. Then I clamped the side pieces together and measured the strips for the lid. And Dozuki delivered the order again. After that I put the smaller strips aside and planed some unevenness off the bigger side pieces. And then I put the ends and the sides together with some Titebond and nails. *** BLOOPER *** All right, after this picture I noticed a minor error I made. I nailed the pieces together from the end while I was supposed to nail them together from the sides - and the bottom plate was too short. And off they went. ![]() Aaaaaaand next. After I nailed them together again, I noticed that I didn't calculate the plywood thickness when cutting the end pieces - and the bottom plate was now too narrow. And off they went. ![]() And after some sawing and gluing and hammering I had this. I had to make a quick test to make sure I didn't screw the whole thing up with my great measuring skills. And it fits! This might work! ![]() I think I can make the lid tomorrow, but after that I have to get back onto my workbench project. At the moment I'm having some slight cash flow problems so I have to wait for a week to get the rest of the materials I need to complete the case. I have an old mattress that maybe could be used as padding for the inside, but I still need to get some fabric, hinges, latches, corner pieces and a handle.

Re: This is Sparta!
"Who can we get on this case?
![]() We need Perry Mason Someone to put you in place Calling Perry Mason" So I started doing the lid for the case today. I already had the two side pieces and had to make the end pieces also. I drew two lines using a side piece as a template. And suddenly there were parts for my frame. After some little planing and checking how they fit on the top of the bottom, I put them together. This was bit tricky as the strips were quite small and after putting three pieces together the frame was quite unstable. But I managed to complete it with minor damages. The plywood started to crack a little, so I couldn't continue with it as I had to secure the cracks with some extra glue. So now the other end of the frame is clamped and waiting for the Titebond to dry and after that I'll install the lid and some wood blocks to the corners for some strength. As I'm paranoid, I decided to make similar blocks for the bottom of the case aswell. Measured them just big enough for my furniture nails and chopped them to the size. And installed them with some glue and nails.

Re: This is Sparta!
Nice work on the case Poro! I'd like to see some more pics on the progress of the bench also.
Cash flow and time...If these were not an issue we would all have a shop like your Father-in-law's and wall full of handmade guitars. All things considered, you're doing a damn good job!

Hopefully the case looks nice in the end too. ![]() I'll post some bench pictures after I get back home from school. The cash flow problems will actually get a little bigger when the hospital bills start to appear. Luckily Finnish health care system is not as expensive as in the US. I think we'll have to pay only max. 600€ (750$) in a year and the rest will be paid by the government. Something good about our awfully high tax rates, should stop complaining about them now. ![]() (Yesterday I gave wife some kind of post-chemotherapy support injection, cost us 24€ (30$) that would had cost 1350€ (1690$) without help from our system.) ![]() I can give more specific information after I get back home. (Wow! Feels like I'm teenager again! Schoooooool sucks! )

Re: This is Sparta!
I hate school, but I do find accounting classes interesting. I think I'm losing it.
![]() I checked the pictures of my workbench project and there isn't really much to tell about them. Just some pictures of measuring, sawing, drilling and rasping. But here's a link to that album: My Fugly Workbench project Of course if you guys want to see that coming alive, I can include it to this thread. I haven't included it because it's not guitar-related project. ![]() And here's the recipe for the color... [After sanding the wood, blowing it with canned air and cleaning it with naphta rag.] I just stained the body black (and sanded the risen grain off very carefully) and added sealer coat, which in my case was just really thin nitro. Probably not the optimal choice, but my resources were a bit limited. Then I let it dry over night. Next day I used the air spray and naphta to clean it up again. And then it was time to add the grain filler (natural colored Timbermate). I mixed red stain powder and alcohol and used the mixture to dilute the Timbermate. I'd describe the texture "sludgish". And here's where the magic happens. ![]() I mixed the Timbermate and red stain and somehow got pink and purple Timbermate instead of red Timbermate. (Well, at first it looked red, then it changed its color.) Put the Timbermate all over my guitar and was really worried how it looked. Wiped the excess the best I could and left it dry. Next day I sanded the surface so that Timbermate was mainly in the grain, and of course, I sanded too little here and too much there, but the result was quite nice. It wasn't what I planned it to be, but I changed my plan on the run and I stopped when I was satisfied with the pattern. ![]() After that I added 2 sealer coats and started the basic clear schedule (2-3 coats in a day, 1 hour between - 24 hours of drying - cleaning and sanding - repeat until enough coats) I also had that infamous black glaze coat episode, when I wasn't satisfied with the black I had. Ended having a gray satin coat and had to sand it off. (I now know the reason for that - I bought black pigment and of course the jar I picked up from the shelf was something that was put in the wrong place at the store. I was supposed to pick up jet black and got graphite (!!!) black. )Basically the whole plan was to try TV Yellow/TV Black/ Dog hair -type finish, but with different colors. Screw that up and you might have something similar I have now. ![]() Did I forget something? I wrote this in a hurry, hopefully it's not all wrong and not too bad English.

Some progress again as I had little time to install the lid to the frame. First I put the lid's frame on the top of the actual case and checked if it was ok. And after test fitting the lid on and approving it, I just applied some Titebond and hammered some nails in. A strong staple gun would be much better in this task, I think. ![]() Then I took a little piece of wood (big enough for 4 corner pieces) and measured the height. Chop chop. Bang bang. Now this project just has to wait for a week. I should get some cash for the fabrics and hardware then. The nitro has been curing for 16 days now. Two weeks to go...

Re: This is Sparta!
Well, I haven't thought THAT far yet. (My plan at the moment: something for the outside and something else for the inside.
)Single color is always good option, but we'll see when I go shopping. I didn't even think about Ikea, but might also check what they have. ![]() But first I will check the fabric store nearby.

Re: This is Sparta!
I'll check Jätti-Rätti first, it's closer.
Eurokangas is next on the list, my ex-wife used to shop a lot there. One question that haunts my mind is the padding issue. Is the cellfoam from the old mattress good enough or should I invest in some styrofoam?

1) Buy styrofoam. Use it. We learn nothing, but you probably succeed in your choice of materials. 2) Use cellfoam. Fail. We all learn cellfoam sucks. 3) Use cellfoam. Succeed. We all will know cellfoam works and can use it in our future construction attempts. (Not that any of us is planning on building a case or anything *whistling, looking as innocent as a guy who just took a dump at his neighbors flowerbench* )
