what year is this SG?

My friend got a dirt cheap SG to fix up. It was covered with a lot of paint and putty. We sanded down to a point where we're wondering when this was made. The serial number was barely there, so that's no help. It looks to have to P90 routs, a wrap around tail piece holes, 3 vibrato screw holes, holly veneer (or at least not black fiberboard), and SG special control rout. ps fingerboard was destroyed so it was removed. And no original parts were included.

Re: what year is this SG?

Hard to tell.
Can you post a picture of the back, mainly the neck joint ?

My guess from what your showing us is an early to mid 60's SG Special

Oh and does your friend want to sell it ?

Re: what year is this SG?

Seems to be a '61 SG Special, but I'm no SG expert.

Re: what year is this SG?

Wow, thanks everyone. Yeah we thought it was a piece of junk, especially with the two tone metallic green/ purple paint job it had.
But I think I convinced my buddy to just restore it, well have me restore it. I going to try to find its original color somewhere if possible.

I don't know if it's worth trying to make it look like that, or if it's even possible!

It possibly could but...........a ton of work would need to be done.
And looking at that abortion called pick up cavities
That's where the bulk of the work would need to take place.

tell ya what, don't waste your time and just send it to me !

as would Polaris White....

Make no mistake - with a pair of Lollar P90s and some decent hardware, your friend's piece of junk will be an awesome tone monster.... !

Re: what year is this SG?

Some scraping of the control cavity revealed a little red spot.
Refinish it cherry red?
