"The official MLP Rist Guitars build thread"
I am starting the thread.
Now for all you picture addicts, this will be a double edge sword. There will be PLENTY of pictures every step of the way. The other edge of the sword is, they will be slow coming. I am doing this project in my spare time (the little that I have) and there will be other people's schedules in play as well. Set your preferences so you get Email notification on this thread should you choose to follow it. Here is the thread that started it all should you choose to read up on the history. Rist Guitars Raffle to Support MLP ![]() Roman

Re: "The official MLP Rist Guitars build thread"
Here is an overview of the project;
Things have been finalized with the guitar This is going to be a one pickup "MLP Special" Mahogany body and neck VERY old Brazillian Fingerboard with neck binding . The only neck inlay will be MLP inlaid in mother of pearl at the 12th fret. (of course you will have side dots) One Very special P90 is being made for this instrument. It will have an aged TV finish. On the headstock, it will be sporting lightweight Kluson tuners, the Rist logo, and will be hand signed in gold. The Serial # is MLP001 I had toyed around with the idea of a 2 pickup version and a Bigsby but abandoned. that concept in favor of a tone monster! I have decided on a true Rock and Roll machine Not having a neck pickup will give the maximum neck to body transfer. We will have a Wraparound Bridge /Tailpiece Sheer elegant simplicity. The Guitar will be presented to the Winner at the Los Angeles Namm show in a lightweight compact flight case lined in Blue velvet. If the Winner cannot attend the NAMM show, it will be shipped to Him or her. (along with pictures of the people involved in the Creation of this instrument) The case will come signed by all involved along with it's own one of a kind case candy. There you go. Roman

Re: "The official MLP Rist Guitars build thread"
![]() I have heard it said that a picture is worth a thousand words, not the case with these pictures. What are we viewing here? It just looks like wood! It needs a story; First off, This is Very old Brazilian Rosewood estimated at about 75 years old. This is the stuff I have been hoarding for 20 some years. When special Guests would come by the shop, if they were allowed to hang out for more than an hour, and came with beer, this stash of wood would come out. We would drool and go ooh and ahh, then back in the box it would go. I had bought a chunk from an old furniture maker who said he had this board for about 40 years from what he remembered. It was twice as long as what you see in the picture and was a pretty thick chunk. At the time, my band saw had busted, so I had no way of cutting up the board. I made a deal with MAX, that if he would get it cut up for me, he could have half. He jumped on this offer with relish and verve. He took the board and I went back to work with the satisfaction that it would come back in a couple of days re sawn. He went about his business in the shop as well. About 5 minutes later he came back and gave me my half. He simply took the board over to the drill press and drilled holes into it at the center point, then with a hand saw cut it in half!! I said; , repeatedly![]() I then clarified for him what the actual deal was. ![]() In the second picture you will see the drill holes at the end of the board. Well, he did in fact honor his part of the bargain. and came a couple of days later with sawn up boards. ![]() ![]() This is the very same piece of wood that Quite a few MAX replicas are sporting as a fingerboard. His share is all gone and used up, I still have a few. This particular board will go on the MPL special. cheers Roman

Re: "The official MLP Rist Guitars build thread"
Wow that is cool. Not only is the guitar itself going to have story but each piece associated with it has it's own story as well. Very historical. This guitar is going to be published when it's done for sure.
that is one cool looking piece of Brazzy. Way to set this one off right Roman!

Re: "The official MLP Rist Guitars build thread"
I have built many pieces of fine furniture in my past, I never built a guitar, kinda wish i still had my shop up and running, unfortunately when we sold our house i lost my shop building, but i am getting off the subject, what i wanted to ask is, if you guys ever considered using Zebra wood for the fretboard, now that is a highly figured wood, maybe too much for a fretboard...it would look kick-ass.....

NOPE, We're going traditional old school. Tried and true, the stuff legends were made from.

Re: "The official MLP Rist Guitars build thread"
Oh ok,
i can relate about your use of 20 year old wood, i have stacks of very rare woods, some well over 30 years old, all stickered and waiting for the shop to be up again, one day maybe i will attempt a guitar...
