Re: Knarbens' first build - a 3D model transfer

My covered humbucker is on it's way back from Schaller and should arrive tomorrow.
I can only continue working on the weekends, so it will take some more weeks to finish my first guitar.
All that's left to do are some more oil coats, a little fretboard care and the final assembly plus the electronics.
I'm exited when/how things come together!

Re: Knarbens' first build - a 3D model transfer

As I expected the covered and wax potted Schaller arrived on friday!
Great service, clean work and fast ... thumbs up! Some free plecs also ...

I'd like to show you some more shots of how the color turns out.
The upper view of the first photo shows the color best I think ...
like I said sometimes it's even a wine red as after all I went with some dark red in the mix.

I'm going to buy some soldering stuff now ...

Dude, that thing is looking awesome! The style, the color... everything.

Tuned down to B that thing would be an absolute sludge monster! (and kinda makes me miss having a shorter scale all mahog guitar around the house...)

Well, once it was designed to have one, but I prefer humbuckers personally.
Maybe the three way switch – parallel/splitt/series options will give me the room to at least come close to P90 sounds?

That wasn't my intention, but since it adds a classy, vintage vibe I can live with it.
When light catches in the grain it turns into a bright and warm red!

EDIT: Edited the color in the pic ... this is more what it looks like in person.

Also I'll definitely go with a covered pickup now!

So clean and so beautiful !!

The neck joint is so precise that you could easily go without a pick guard ! In any case I would use double sided tape for the PG to avoid drilling any screw holes. So you can go either way depending on your mood...

Amazing work ! Congratulations !
(BTW: I fully support the covered pickup choice)

Thanks a lot!
I like open coils, but to me this one looked naked without a cover.

Well, there's a small gab at the tenons end wall, but aside from that it looks clean enough to leave the pg off. To be honest I am looking forward excitedly to finally add the pickguard and I already drilled the holes in it. An screwless mounting is a nice idea though I would have left it undrilled though.

I did the double-sided tape thing on a Hamer Special w/P90s I owned back in the early 90s.
That guitar looked naked without any PG so I had one made of tortoise lam. I attached it using the kind of double sided tape used to fix photos to frames, and it lasted for years. Funny thing is that I bought that guitar twice (almost three times)... But that's another story...

Just stumpled upon this ... hope you don't mind DGN!
Looks like it's cut from an self-adhesive acoustic pg blank? Not too easy to remove in case of no-pickguard-mood

Re: Knarbens' first build - a 3D model transfer

Mounted parts to check all holes and drilled the missing ones ...
Just came back from adding some final touches to the fretboard.
I'll probably do one one more coat of oil and than I'll assemble everything.

Here's a teaser (mobile phone).
Admit it pickguard and cover haters – it looks nice!
I'll peel off the pg foil once everything is finished.

Re: Knarbens' first build - a 3D model transfer

The day has come! My first guitar! I'm stoked!
So happy and thankful how it turned out ...
I could never have imagined my project would end up that nice.
It looks WAY better than the 3d renderings

Got to get rid of a quite hum though.
Apart from that the electronics are done and working.

just posted on the 'guitars you built', but have to post here also. that turned out exceedingly well. IMO, when a guitar is simple in it's appointments, it is imperitive that everything be clean, tight and right. you nailed every aspect of it. congratulationis. what's next? ..and when. i love it. you have quite a knack for this.

Thank you very much man! I think the overall quality is good. Maybe not as perfect as it appears on my photos (trying to present it in the proper light you know? ) Of course there are flaws and small mistakes (nothing dramatic) ... This was my first project and the journey of experience has to start somewhere, right?

Anyway I still can't believe my first guitar looks that nice,
works all the way and plays good! Need to set the final action and stuff though ...

Oh I have plans about my second build, but I haven't made up my mind over all the specs yet. I came up with a design that averaged the shape of this guitar with an superstrat I've drawn, so it's basicly what Paul Reed Smith was doing with his shape. After some tweaking it came out quite attractive and esthetically it combines the advantages of both worlds. It's a 22 fret ... not sure which pickup setting I'll go with ... maybe SSH? Let's see.

Congrats to you and your friend on both builds. They are fantastic looking. Your build is particularly appealing to me because of its SG type look. I wasnt expecting to like your headstock design while watching your progress but the final result is most excellent. Great job!

Sir, that is an inspiration. I commend you on such a fine product, I am literally in awe. Such finesse and perfection on a first build...its just...words can't express how impressed I am with this. I wish I had your skills! Ever consider building these to order?

But seriously Knarbens, you've done a wonderful job. Kudos to you, and I wait in impatient envy for your second build
