Re: 57 Custom replica Build
Well, this build may progress faster than my others, and then come to a screeching halt.
I just got laid off from my job after seven years so, I'll have a lot of time to work on it. Unfortunately, I'll have to use the $500. I've saving up for this build so far, by quitting smoking, bringing my lunch and coffee form home to work over the past six months for the household expenses. Anyway, all I can say is....... F#ck it, life goes on right? So, for now let's get building! ![]() Cut the body out and hit it with the spindle sander.

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
So far, I used Poplar, Redwood, and Walnut on my previous builds. This is the first build where I've used Mahogany, this stuff is a dream to work with.

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
I feel your pain I got laid off from a jod 4 years ago after being there 9 years. I got the call on Wednesday night from my supervisor that Friday would be my last day. He was a good guy and I enjoyed working for him, couldn't say the same for the company though. The next Monday I strapped on my tool belt and went to swinging a hammer for a living, which was hard after being a computer field tech for 9 years ,but I did what I had to do. Now 2 more jobs later I am better off than I have ever been working in IT for a Hospital. It will be better days ahead, just don't be afraid to ask for what you want, I sat back for 9 years and took whatever was offered to me but not anymore.

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
Making some headway on the body, I took the bookmatched Mahogany top to a local wood supplier and had it planed. They were very nice and did the job for free. They have a great supply of hard maple including flamed, quilted, birdseye, and plain. I will be spending some money with them in the future.
cap planed up. ![]() ![]() ![]() nothing to do now but, wait.

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
Can't wait to see what you pull off for your own personal build. Everything so far has been extremely impressive. I'll definitely be following the build.

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
I just picked up a LP Custom HS overlay, ebony FB and 5ply pick guard today.
![]() I already have the TRC, block inlays, PG bracket and screws, selector switch and full electronics, strap locks and pickups(2 humbuckers) stashed away. I've been planning this build for a while actually, and collecting parts on the sly. ![]() All I have left to get is the binding, black and clear lacquers, bridge and tailpiece, pup rings and screws and tuners, but that stuff will have to wait. That's it for now.

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
do you have the inlays per 50s specs, with the last 3 inlays the same size?

Re: 57 Custom replica Build
So, I've been studying pictures and videos of original 57 customs. I've noticed that due to the multi lam binding, it looks as if the recurve is closer to the outer edge of the waist but it isn't really. They seem faily consistant with other '50's pauls. They all differ slightly as they were all carved by hand so, I believe Ex's carve templates will work just fine.
