Any updates or are you just busy with the baby business?

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
Gentlemen, I'm finally ready to drop the color, and it is going to be a black top. I really gave a thought to paint it ivory, as the imperfections are less visible on the light surfaces, but the binding will be less accented in this case.
Yesterday I scored 2 cans of glitter lacquer and now I'm arguing with myself on should I add it over the black or not. My inner Ziggy says "yes", but my inner Darth says "no way"... ![]() Here's the sample

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
OK, my inner Darth won.
![]() Flat black, shiny finish it is. Primer went on pretty nicely, but it was a challenge to mask the binding, at least for untrained me ![]() ![]() ![]() I can see the finish line now! And the carved top looks smooth. But gentlemen, NEVER EVER laminate the top out of layers, it's a PITA beyond imaginable

Almost there, Victor! You've been through a lot, but it's nearly complete, and I (for one) can't wait to see the finished product!

![]() Getting there, first 2 layers of paint is on. Acrylic dries rather fast, thanks to our hot weather. ![]() Oh yeah, the pieces lumber under the build are movingui and macore. Both are 2"x~8", I've got something like 9' of each. Because when you start building, it's hard to quit. I sense an LP and a bass somewhere in the future. Both should be neck-through designs again.

Sweet!
![]() I can only imagine how sweet that will be when you add some of that common sloppiness...

Herr Eisenmann, I presume?
well, this shape is screams to be visually abused... In a good way ![]() Gentlemen, I gave a question on wiring, as I'm planning to make the bridge HB splittable with a push-pull, please review my scheme.

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
I think that should work...the white is your braided ground, the yellow and green are the finish leads of the coils, the black is the start lead of the slugside (North) bobbin and the red from the polepiece side, right?
![]() By the way, everything is looking stunning, but step away from the glitter!

Well. yeah, except yellow is bare (braided/ground) and white is white I've found a guide how to detect the polarity and bobbin ends, so, basically I'm mimicking an SD scheme (a combo of 2, in fact), but I feel somehow uncertain.Gee... Engelbert Humperdinck?.. IN MY PAJAMAS?!?! |

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
Hmmm...in this scheme, the bare is soldered to the ground on the volume pot...
...but, in the end, all that is required is some brief messing about with soldering irons, a couple of burned fingers and a large, black mark in the beech veneer dinner table which you have to explain to your wife via Skype extremely shamefacedly, for once grateful for the fact that she's not in the country and, by the time she is, she will possibly have cooled down a bit...

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
Naw...I got lucky because I did similar wiring fairly recently. That's all.
![]() ...and another pesky question. Why those capacitor values? I would have thought .022 for the humbucker and either .022 or .047 for the P-90 (is that a P-90?) would be better. Just curious, you understand...

![]() Well, it is a P-90 clone and a HB made by MEC, so I went for the same capacities as SD's wiring diagrams state, 0.47 mF for both P-90 and HBs. Anyway, I think, this is the least hot problem of the moment and I'll have some room for changes as soon as I'll sort out the lacquer.

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
4 more layers today, no visual changes. Yesterday lacquer has developed some lesions. Just like a well forgotten starlette, cheap solution mean cheap results. Have I already told you I'm about to invest into a mediocre compressor? Heck ja, I'm buying an air comp for the next year. Here, I've said it =)

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
Dunno how you, gentlemen, are going to perceive this post, I'm not in the mood for hooting this time. More lesions appeared on the surface, looks like the lacquer is pulling itself, forming strange cracks, linear, yet in any possible direction. Thin layers were applied. I leave the build alone for a while to settle down. Damn acrylic...
More time to design, though |

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
It's been ~2 days, the surface seems stabilized now.
Ok, I'm buffing. The last glance over a relatively thick layer of acrylic. ![]() And off we go ![]() ![]() 30 minutes and couting ![]() the finer the mirror the more mistakes I discover. ![]() 2 hours, I'm truy scared to cut thru the polish ![]() The last one for today, it's 2.5 hours of exercise, my right hand is numb, tomorrow I'll have to drive a car with a manual transmission and I'm still in charge of feeding the youngling tonight, and baby food is served stirred, not shaken. Totally worth it ![]() ![]() I'm scared somehow, finally it looks acceptable to be called a guitar. With a zero monetary... yet infinite emotional value ![]() I use 2 grades of automotive rubbing compound by Dr. Wax, fine and super-fine. |

Re: LP Special doublecut, neck-through build
And once more, with a sunlight... All mistakes are getting more and more visible.
I guess, I'm going to use a perfect excuse, a Russian proverb and transaction costs theory. ![]() As we're in a trend of naming the single builds, I have to invent something cunning for the blackie. How about "The Chaos Magnet"? It will describe my building process with all the calamities just perfectly. Or, maybe, "The Ship of Fool"? It will have a spaceship for the TR cover...and me for a builder ![]() ![]() The third option - "The Looney", as far as it gets the moon on its head plate and I'm still the one to blame

I think it should be called 'A Concrete Expression of the Ineffability of the Longing for Perfection'. Good Russian Formalist name, that.
...or 'Effie', for short.
