You sound bummed about that, but remember that the Les Paul logo is silkscreened on and they look perfect.

I think if done right it could look awesome

Re: Custom inlay on headstock

Use a gold Sharpie and then lightly clearcoat over top.

Re: Custom inlay on headstock

You can do it your self with testor's decal paper on your ink jet or laser printer.
Thats what the places are doing. Around $18 for a pack 8 1/2 x 11 ( DecalPaper.com - Decals - Waterslide decal paper or inkjet,laser printers Alps & copiers )

These guys are great...I use them quite a bit. Highly recommended! They can do totally custom decals for you at a reasonable cost.

Regarding this suggestion...it will only work if you're putting the decal on a light (preferably white) headstock. The ink used in inkjet, and I believe laser printers are semi-transparent, so if you try to put them on a black or dark headstock, they'll practically disappear. Believe me, I've tried it. After a fair amount of research, I realized that in order to make this work, you need a special printer that uses opaque colors, rather than the semi-transparent inks that normal printers use...and these special printers are quite expensive.

Yep had the same experience, I did find if you print it onto white decal paper and then over lay the colour it works.
