Build#3 LP Double cut

This one might take some time to get moving cus I'm still working on the Special build but, I had some time so I got inspired.

Black walnut body just roughed out for now.

This is what I'm going for more or less...I'm toying with going for a GT.

Re: Build#3 LP Double cut

I love the grain.

A friend of mine has been promising to bring me a huge billet of black walnut. He took down the tree from his back yard years ago. Says the stuff is killer. This makes me want to give him a call.

Re: Build#3 LP Double cut

How about an all natural or slightly amber tinted finish and gold hardware on that DC?

Ok, cool, another TKO build....

That's going to be one "mean" looking guitar. Love watching you work. (subscribed)

Cpt_G,
That would look great. I am leaning twards all natural at this point and I'm looking for the some Maple for the cap but I can't deside on flamed, quilted, or plane top. I'm thinking that flamed or quilted would be too austintatious and might fight with the grain of the Walnut.
But I haven't made any choices as of yet.
I do like gold hardware, it would be a very nice a touch.

If you can find a very subtle flamed piece of maple. That would look elegant yet not "tacky" imho. Best of both worlds.

TKO, you can NOT cover that wood up! That grain is terrific. That walnut will not be contained.

Re: Build#3 LP Double cut

That grain won't be covered up cuz that's the back.

If all goes according to plan the top will be carved from a bookmatched set of white Korina.

Re: Build#3 LP Double cut

I approve of carved-top DCs (just need to finish mine now, dammit).

That walnut is outstanding. You certainly can't beat the price, though I wasn't aware that Connecticut switched from money to a barter system.

Have you considered a carved cherry top? Not that there's anything wrong with limba.

Seriously. Getting a 2 hour block on a weekend during daylight hours is such a luxury lately....

All the progress I've been making lately is so minor I haven't really updated my thread. Lots of jigs and shop upgrades I can do in the evening.

OK, I got the Korina, it's all mine.

I guess I should get the body ready for chambering, did I mention I was chambering the body?

No, you failed to mention that detail. But, that walnut LOOKS heavy, so I can see why
you'd do it. It still seems like the walnut's detail should be showing on the top, but what
do i know anyway?

Re: Build#3 LP Double cut

How about this......

I see you have at least 3 billets full width for bodies. What if you took one of those, cut in half long way, then book match that for the top. Walnut on walnut.

It is heavy, as it is, the body alone weighs in at 8lbs.
I really don't want a 12lb.+ guitar when finished.

I think the walnut top idea is the way to go........in my humble opinion, which is worthless
of course since it's your build............nevermind

Hey man, I gotta tell ya, the only thing that was set in stone for me is the body was always going to be walnut, the neck is going to be three piece maple and it will have p90's. Like all of my builds, this one too is "fly by the seat of the pants" I welcome all ideas and input.
I enjoy building and I'm not so opinated that I think my ideas are the best.
Really, what do I know? I'm new to this whole building thing.
I like that people bounce their ideas off me. So, keep it up.

Any way, it's 10:30pm, the wife and kids are asleep, the house is quiet, and I'm headded out to the shop to cut a template for the chambering.
