Here is mine. Not done obviously. Just taking a SC sun bath at the moment. This is about 1/2 hour in. I just checked it after 2 hours and its lost Tons of the red already... Its the Moslers red. You wont be disappointed in Toms Kit you ordered or his customer service. 110% satisfied...

Edit: here it is after a day in the sunshine.

Re: MLP Bartlett Build

Great! Ill use it then with my build

By the Way... Those Dave Johnson Vintage Size Inlays... are they accurate enough or have they to be shaped manually (corners etc.)

Im asking you, because you have the perfekt reference with that 55 Board.

Thanks!

In This post: MLP Bartlett Build I make some comparisons between what is sold by several vendors (including myself) as 'vintage' and 'historic'.
In short, the 'historic' cut inlays are almost dead on perfect. The 'vintage' ones are not, and I think many of the vendors are phasing them out as they just aren't that close.
I've compared them to 55, 56, 57, and 59 Les Paul's first hand, and this is true of all of them. (they aren't perfect, but you will see they are VERY close).

Re: MLP Bartlett Build

So the Dave Johnson "Historic Cut" inlays are more Vintage than the Dave Jonson "Vintage Cut" Inlays?

This is good to know!

Oh my god... I Simply can't believe the attention to detail in all of these guitars. Beautiful, just amazing. Guelph's not that far away from Newmarket, definately would be worth the drive to see all of this in the real! Assuming you don't mind a 17 year old kid touching everything It's amazing, I have a guitar book with several 59's in it and I would never be able to tell a difference, just amazing.

I applaud you good sir!

yes, its aniline dye, oil based.
The backs faded just like the tops, but the pores are always a bit darker because they are packed with the filler.

They are very close. Just a bit more 'shrunken' looking.

Re: MLP Bartlett Build

Hi Tom, its me again with one Question:

I bought Cellulose-nitrate Inlays and i think they have an odd Color (too yellowish)

What do you think, your inlays look almost white.

Bought them from Crazyparts here in Germany

Heres a picture of the inlays laing on a sheet of normal white copy-Paper.

I' m not Tom but I know the answer to your question. Just sand them a little and they'll lose the "vintage" color layer.

Re: MLP Bartlett Build

yes, just sanding them should remove whatever colour is on them.

Hi Tom,
I have been admiring your guitar builds.
I have ordered some parts from you for my build.
I need to order some fret wire. I noticed that you used Stew mac wire. Which of there many gauge wires do you use?

Thanks, Adam.

Re: MLP Bartlett Build

Hi,

Ivegot a problem to glue the binding you sell on my BRZ Rosewood Board.

For the Bodybinding i used just pieces of Binding meltet into Pure Aceton as the Glue and it bonds very good.

But for the Neck this method doesn't seem to work, the Rosewood seems to push of the Glue.

I tried to sand the surface with 60 grit sandpaper but it didn't get better...

What Method you recommend to glue the Binding especially on Rosewood?

Do you know how Gibson glued their Binding in the 50`s ?

Thank you very much!

I would not recommend using binding melted in acetone for any glue at all. it has very little adhesive properties to it, and just won't last the way proper glue will. The glue I would suggest is something like duko cement I think it's called. It's a cellulose based glue, and similar to what Gibson used in the 50's.
Gibson did not use royalite binding on the necks. They used celluloid binding and royalite only on the bodies.

This might help

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-1qvwes4aXI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I use binding shavings dissolved in acetone and added to duco. That way it is white, gets good penetration into the wood and after drying stays put.
