Dave Johnson Restorations
Dave Johnson Restorations specializes in returning vintage Les Pauls back to original condition. While our main specialty are Les Pauls, I also restore other guitars as well.
Guitars in various conditions from cracked headstocks,
over-sanded tops, bad pickup routes, bad finishes, missing inlays, broken necks, fingerboards, and poorly routed bodies can be restored.
New Maple Tops for Les Pauls
I specialize in re-topping Les Pauls with new maple tops, and then re-carving to vintage specs. If your looking for an exceptional flame or quilt maple top for your Les Paul, I have 'em!
Conversions for Les Pauls
Early 1950s Les Paul Goldtops can be converted for new pickup routes, ABR-1 bridges, and stop tail pieces. 1952 and 1953 Les Pauls can be converted to 1956 or 1957 specs, or retopped to 1959 specs. 1954 Les Pauls can be coverted to 1957 specs.

Also is the only direct supplier of the original fomula celluloid inlay material as use by Gibson in the 50's

My shop is a full service shop equipped to handle all work needed to restore your vintage guitar investment. References are available upon request and all work is guaranteed to be of the finest craftsmanship.

Les Paul is a trademark of Gibson Guitars. Historic Makeovers is a private owned company

Just got my LP back from this guy for a setup. He did a great job, if you're on Long Island he's a good guy to use.

Re: Luthier/Tech List

Looking for a reputable luthier in Northeast Tennessee. My Les Paul is a beaut, but I think my nut needs filing, and it just doesn't play like it should IMO. Thanks in advance!

he does a good job, but one of the reasons i started to do my own work was b/c of Ed Clark. he takes a long time and isnt too personal, but his fret work is supposed to be superb. he got a compliment by a guy that is very well known for his amazing fret work (sorry forgot his name, begins with an "S" and was based in NYC up until 9/11) so for fret work i would give hima nod if you cant wait.

Re: Luthier/Tech List

I've used a few people here in the Houston area but I have to say the best has been Mike Nedd at Nedd Guitars : Professional Repairs and Handcrafted Instruments From simple setups to custom builds his work is fantastic. He's done everything from setups to total refrets for me and I've always been impressed. And I'm a picky mofo, lol.

I've used Ron Pace as well and when he does the work it's good, but I think a lot of his stuff is done by other people in his shop these days. Also his turn around time can sometimes be pretty long, but I know people that swear by him and won't go to anyone else. His website is Guitar Repair Shop in Houston Texas - Pace Guitar Repair - Gibson, Taylor, Fender, Martin Certified

Hope this helps someone.

Anyone in MA or NH or RI or ME?

Looking for a tech to level my 30+ yo frets. I'm in MA but willing to drive a couple hours to get to someone good.

I'm not excited about shipping... everything I've had shipped to me in the last ten years has come in a damaged box :-(

Any pointers to tech I can drive to?

Thanks,

Figures...I'm an uprooted Akronite living in Cinci. Kenmore Blvd....near the old Hibernian Club?

Need to find a place down here. If anyone knows of a quality luthier in southwest Ohio, please hook me up!

Another request for south Florida...

I have used Junkyard Amps in Palm Beach county once and he was great, but it wasn't on an amp, I needed a warranty repair on a Pod X3L I use for practice and I found him through Line 6.

Re: Luthier/Tech List

I'm a luthier in Fayetteville, AR (Northwest Arkansas). I'm the only guy in town that does heavy duty structural, finish/refinishing, and restorations. I can do anything from setups to complete vintage restorations. I've been doing a lot of crack repairs lately (the humidity changes so drastic in our area). If you need some work done on any stringed instrument, I'm your guy. I own/run a recording studio as well. My studio website has pictures of some of my repairs. Call or email me for estimates.

Re: Luthier/Tech List

Ok, didn't see him listed in the Pennsylvania list. Matt's is in Jonestown, Pa. Kinda between Harrisburg and Reading.
Here's a link. Guitar Repair & Set - Ups - Crete Guitar Shop

Matt does setups and repairs. Matt did a re-fret and setup on my 71 deluxe.

Now, I think he might be a little "off the mark" with his statement about the '79 top being "split in three places from the fire". The '79 is a Norlin and was it not common for them to have three piece tops? Regardless, Matt did a good job restoring that '79 and he did a nice refret on my '71.
