Re: Think I can fix it?

Well, it survived the torture test, so I put it all back together this morning. It's a helluva cool guitar!

Now we'll take it back apart and do the cosmetic stuff. Grovers and Badass to the trashbin!!!

Stay tuned.......

Re: Think I can fix it?

Great work

Any chance of a close-up of the repair (before any finish gets applied)?

Re: Think I can fix it?

Like cars...A quote I heard somewhere... "Don't crush 'em, Restore 'em" I think that applies to guitars too....but if you must toss them call me and tell me where it is so I can "save" it or at least scavenge parts

Re: Think I can fix it?

Thanks for posting the close-ups. Fantastic work. I normally steer clear of guitars with issues, but when I see the work that goes into fixing them right, maybe I shouldn't be so fussy?

I'm over in England - can anyone recommend a luthier with the same attention to detail over here? I have a '59 Jr that was previously routed for a humbucker and I'd wondered about restoring it (at the mp, the dogear P90 cover just about hides the HB route). Seeing this has made up my mind to get it restored properly.

Re: Think I can fix it?

Quick update....

Did I mention that the neck was mostly sawn off by the previous repairman?

I guess when he hit the truss rod anchor the fight went out of him.

Anyway, back to modern times. The headstock is plugged to undo the Grover horror....

I use a plug cutter and made the plugs from old growth mahogany that matched the guitar's structure. I had Glen the Apprentice dowel the tuner screw holes as well.

After drilling the plugs to the proper diameter to match the correct ferrules, the head was taped off and the first coats of black were sprayed. Here it is after wetsanding the first coat...

Now it dries....

Re: Think I can fix it?

I cut thin strips of mahogany that matched the grain and shaved them until they could just barely slide in. When glued, they expanded a tickle, giving the area much needed structure.

Yeah, I'm crazy. I think this stuff up.

Re: Think I can fix it?

that's exactly what I would have done....But I thought there was some sort of trade secret amazing way That was better....I'm glad the simplest ways are sometimes, actually most times the best....

After seeing the progress in this thread, I have to say anybody should be proud to own this guitar....there's always someone who'd refuse it.

Re: Think I can fix it?

30 years ago, it was a broken budget guitar.

Now it's a rare classic.

Nobody knew!

Re: Think I can fix it?

I've only been playing for 12 years and I think it would have been at least a classic when I started....Maybe my BFG will be worth something.....probably not....but that ax is amazing....probably going to be a real good players guitar

<gibber> What was the 'right' repair for that - looks like 1mm or so lost? Howdya do that? Did you cover this above (time to scroll up)...

Still in awe of the work and detail here. Still hoping for a UK luthier recommendation... Anyone...

Re: Think I can fix it?

Final color coat and clear, fresh from spraying.....

The hard part is to NOT make it perfect, but to have it be somewhat mottled as if it aged. It'll dry over the weekend and then the wetsand and buff will take place. Stringup on Tuesday!
