If you do anything long enough, you learn to solve problems efficiently.

That and a few gallons of coffee.

Nowhere near 100%...but enough to get some work done.

Re: 5 string to 8 string bass conversion pics

Sweet - very nicely done! I have an old Ibanez 'bean' bass I'm thinking about doing an 8-string conversion on. My biggest concern is the string spacing though; I'd like to stay with the thinner neck if possible!

What did you use for string spacing between each octaved string? Any good resources for this that you could point me to? Thanks!

Re: 5 string to 8 string bass conversion pics

I patterned the nut off of a Hamer 8-string nut. I can make a cardboard template for you, if you like.

Re: 5 string to 8 string bass conversion pics

Wow, cool! I've been kicking around the idea of converting a tilt-back 6 on a side neck to a 3 on a side, but I was afraid it wouldn't be strong enough. If you can make it work on a 8 string bass, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't give it a try!

I used a template that I made off of a factory Hamer 8 string...I just used some swanky tort pickguard material to do it!

I have been asked if there are any soundfiles of the bass. I will ask the owner.

Re: 5 string to 8 string bass conversion pics

The most impressive thing about the conversion is how you handled the extra strings with the trapeze.

The first thing I thought was 'How is he going to reinforce the bridge to the point where it'll handle 8 strings?' Using the trap makes it a non-issue.

That's why you do what you do and I sit here and marvel at it.
