Hello from KANSAS
Hello everyone.
I am glad to be here. I have been, since 2005, searching and researching and discovering facts pertaining to a Vintage-style Gibson Les Paul Deluxe sold to me as a '1972-i think', Gibson Les Paul Deluxe! There is no serial number, there is an oval indentation on the rear of the headstock. the neck is 3-piece mahogony, the body is Mahogony back/maple thin/Mahogony top/ 3-piece maple top. The guitar has to weigh around 11 pounds.(gawdheavy) The neck tenon is, get this!- LONG tennon! what?! yep. It is TOBACCO BURST- so gorgeous. I think Gibson experimented with how to release the Gibson Les Paul Standard in late '68-early '69 before settling on their GT decision, and I think this guitar was one of the few 'one-off', or 'test run' new designs, which eplains the Tobacco Burst, but non-1972 neck tenon, and non-late 70's maple neck! The fretboard does not appear to be brazillian, but more than one local expert has claimed it appears to be so--- this guitar is hilarious, except that is my first 'old' gibson les paul- and i love its tone- so vicious and interesting! capable of going from early zepplin tones, to pete townsend tones, and even hitting weird Fender-style Hendrix fuzz, with no pedals, just warm dials on the tone knobs, and maybe a little crybaby action. I think this guitar was the predecessor to the 1972 Tobacco Burst, I think it was made during , or prior, to the first runs of the GT deluxe models of '69/'70, and i think i'm lucky to have it. What do you all think? I'll find the appropriate thread. The neck pickup has this stamped into the metal base of the pickup, 'Pat. No 2737842'. The neck tennon comes all the way into the pickup cavity. The pot chamber is of the '69, NOT the '68 routing, as in- AFTER the maple top was applied. I think this guitar, was built in early '69, BEFORE MAY, is a limited run of tobacco burst not produced until 1972, and may be one of the very guitars that led to the decision to offer that color in '72. I think because it was not expected to be sold, this explains the lack of stamp- also known to have started in march-april of '69. The facts as i would tell them; Gibson logo is Dotted i, closed b and o, rare 'trial run' of tobacco burst deluxe long neck tennon 3 piece mahogony neck one of the first pancake bodies ever made, 3 piece maple top tell me it is not possible this is a weird 'trial run' 'test pattern' guitar from the factory, if you know for a fact based on my information, that you think you know what it is. I talked to an old builder from kalamazoo, and he was actually the guy who mentioned that it is possible this was either a custom-order deluxe from early '69, or simply one of the first tobacco's made of that era, because if it was a '75 or so, the neck tenon would be transitional, NOT long, the neck would be maple, not mahogony, and there would be a 'made in usa' stamp. for my own self, i would love to find the truth... but the more i reasearch, read, and play this puppy, the more i think its a really rare piece... the production numbers of tobacco burst were never very large- but if mine was produced under any of those years, it would not resemble so much the traits of those late '68's or early '69's... the pieces all add up: in that period, Gibson didnt even give some of those pieces of the time serial numbers! and HELLO, glad to be here. I also have and love my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard Premium Plus Desert Burst: it and my '69-'75 Deluxe are almost identical in many ways- its funny. The '05 weighs about 3 or 4 pounds less though. |
