Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

So I've just scored my jpp, but as part of the process I needed to sell my mesa boogie lonestar special - great amp - but no pain no gain!

Anyway that now puts me in the market for a cheaper valve amp ideally one that can do a bit of clean and dirty. Also I can't play it too loud...

Can anyone recommend a great amp for the jpp? I'm thinking of the new marshall class 5 or a cornford harlequin (i owned one before the Mesa - nice) or maybe a blues junior..

Is there anything else out there for under £400-500 below 15 Watts that'll get the best out of the JPP??

Any JPP owners found an awesome amp combo?

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

Best thing to do is just go to a music store and play a bunch of different amps.
I love my Blackheart Little Giant and Vox AC15.

I'll have to agree the Blackheart Little Giant is killer.

id say what ive played for the past 3 years would fit the bill perfectly...

the orange rocker 30 a class head- i never had to mic it....its very loud......id maybe set it to 10pm and it sounded unreal.

check out www.myspace.com/redpersona for a few rough recordings of it playing in the band

all recordings except "delayed" were recorded with the stage volume very very low as it was miced at the last gig we did (against my wishes, bloody sound guys, they dont GET that valve amps need to be pushed to really sound good...so theres more pre amp gain than id like from them gig recordings) but still good. NO pedals either...just the guitar (97 les paul) into the amp

i sold my square 2x12 custom matamp cab that had g12 heritage anniversary speakers to fund a mesa boogie rectifier 4x12 cab as i just bought a duel rectifier 3 ch head...and after 3 weeks...i think im deciding i dont liike it.....luckily i didnt sell the orange head....so i will either get a well used orange 4x12 for that or.,,,,, get a marshall....maybe a handwired 1974x (another option) or a 1987x and run a maxon od808 with it.....OR.....keep the orange and get a R9 or R9

im back into the blues now big time.....think ive gone through my metaL PHASE...which didnt last long...going to see killswitch engage for the 2nd time this year in dec.

i really dont know what to do..
had the mesa for a few weeks only......i dont think it has soul....or enough feel....even across the 12 possible modes it has across 3 channels

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

I would have to say a Vox AC15 or Blues jr. thats just my 2 cents. The Vox is an amazing amp and I have the Blues jr and it works really well with a Les Paul.

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

Why don't you just use what Jimmy did a Supro Combo. Find one with a 12" speaker and 6v6 tubes from before the mid 60s. They sound like little marshall stacks. The rumour is he used a modified Supro Thunderbolt, but to be honest any similar amp made around that time by Valco, Epiphone, Airline, National etc with the right specs will get your there.

As far as amps go I wouldn't touch a modern production line amp. There are far too many great vintage amps around that beat the pants of them. You tend to find that those old transformers and speakers have a bit of mojo in them.

100% agree with this. How about an old Gibson GA40 Les Paul amp? (the dirtiest slut around) or a low wattage BF fender, or as imsilly says, an old Valco or Supro or Gretsch amp? Deals can be found out there, and some older amps hold their value if you ever did decide to resell and buy 'new or boutique' another time.

Check out the Reeves recreation of Jimmy's Hylight era amps. I have a 50 watt and love it.. Just put in another order for a 100, and am considering another 50 as a backup studio plug in..

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

If you're looking to go down the Jimmy Page road then I'd check out some Orange amps. JP currently uses the AD30 single channel head regularly. Also the Retro 50 I believe. If you can find one of the earlier AD15's they are amazing too. The Tiny Terror is imo, gets into the little more aggressive/earlier JP tone and is a fun amp.

The old Supro/Valco/National/etc. type combos are a lot of fun. You can pick them up cheap here in the US - I don't know how widely they are available in the UK though. I'd stay away from the Thunderbolt in particular just b/c you end up paying a huge premium for the association with Page (even though the thought is he used a 1624T model i believe? not the thunderbolt).

Personally, I've been on a vintage BF Fender kick lately...you really get the best of all worlds with those. I'd consider a Vox AC15 or AC30 too- another classic tone that I know was a favorite of JP's.

Honestly, tone is subjective. You'd be best to go out and try out a bunch of amps with your guitar and see what suits your ears! There are so many great choices out there for low watt amps!

They had one at a studio I frequent in town, I didn't care for it.. Though I have had a Orange Thunderverb 50, AD 30 and a 50th Anniversary model to play with and all of those can take you to JPP land nicely..

I use a Marshall JCM 900 (model 4102) 100 watt 2x12 combo; but I use a Marshall PB-100 power brake. I turn the amp up to about 9 and set the power brake on 1. Still kinda loud. But you get all that tube sound.....check it out:

Heartbreaker solos 1 and 2: Jimmy Page Murphy aged vs Custom Authentic Les Pauls

Stairway to Heaven 4 different sounds on an aged Jimmy Page Les Paul

If you use the dirty or clean channel, it sounds really good. You can get that amp on ebay for about US$500-900. The power brake is more like $150-250 used.

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

Used Handwired AC15, except no master volume, so you gotta crank it to get OD tones, but I use pedals for that. I got mine used for $700, which should be around 400GBP. Cleans are AMAZING, good clean headroom even at 7 watts. Other than that, the Orange Tiny Terror or AD5 are both solid bets, especially since Pagey is playing Orange amps now. They're also cheaper

I heard Page's Supro was a 1*15 rather than a 1*12. Does anyone know?

Page claimed that it had a 12 speaker which leads the general consensus to be that it was a 1624T model Supro - from late 58/59'.

I've heard that amp before and combined with the right tele and pedal, it's very easy to believe that it's the one. The truth is, Page claims to have had dozens of Supro combos around that time, and for obvious reasons he's always been hush hush about his gear and methods. Can't say as I blame him.

There's a whole thread around this over at the gear page...never got the whole way through it myself, but it might be of some interest to the diehard Page fan -
So which Supro did Jimmy Page really use? - Page 9 - The Gear Page

I've had a few small Supro/National/Valco type combos and they're alot of fun, especially as a second amp to toy around with, but if this was going to be my main amp, I'd look more seriously at an Orange or something similar.

I had it custom made by HIWATT in England. The Royal is merely made by an amp enthusiast in his basement.

That's not a bad option Jimmy. I've heard you can get a great billy gibbons sound with the JCM 900's and he's my 2nd favourite player. Can you comment on the ZZ Top sound with you combo?

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

Maybe you should try one of the Framus Amps Ruby Riot 1 or 2, 30 Watt Class A with EL84 and Celetion Greenback+Vintage 30. Two Channel, each EQ, parallel Input and Reverb. Ruby Riot 1 has lot of Gain in the Lead Channel. The Clean Channel has a little Vox touch. The Ruby Riot 2 has less gain in the lead channel and features a vibrato unit. You should try one of these. But you need strong arms - 30kg! But this is no amp for the living room!! Your neighbours wouldn`t be amused.
Framus international
At home I use a Boss DR 880! - No problems with the neighbours! Any tube amp at home would be too loud.

Re: Amp needed for my Jimmy page custom authentic!

London has more Watkins and Wem valve amps than anywhere. Most of them are low watt and sound like older Marshalls. They can get loud also. Most came with Mullards and aren't too much. Worth checking out.
