I just picked up a used 07 R8 and based on unplugged acoustics, it's loud! But I agree with you on the pickguard, I find it just gets in the way.

Depends on the tune I'm playing but particularly noticeable if I need to strum all 6 strings and I use a long stroke to control tempo. Hitting the pickguard can cause that nut on the back to dent the top but more importantly if it catches me off guard, possibly interrupting my rhythm.
