Junior sitar issues....

Hi everyone! Im a proud owner of a '57 Jr. RI! I have heard that the wraparound tailpiece on some juniors don't have a sharp enough angle so it creates a sitar-like sound on the high e-string! Anyone experienced this problem and how did you deal with it? Is it true that the pigtail wraparound tailpiece solves the problem!?

I've experienced it before on vintage wraptails... usually it's a burr or uneven 'knick' where the strings comes out of the tailpiece. You can fix it by examing and smoothing it out or removing it.

The Pigtail tailpiece has the proper ridge to give you a great break angle.

Re: Junior sitar issues....

this came up on mine recently after a string set change. It was fine before and then after the new set was on the high E sounded like a sitar. I loosened the string and wiggled it and it seated slightly different and it was OK. This 50 year old wraptail has a few grooves in her and I guess I hit a bad spot or maybe just some crap was in there.

What type strings do you guys use on your Jrs? Just curious, I think some strings may work better in a wraptail setup than others.

I think in general, heavier strings work better with wraptails. I use John Pearse 13-56 on my Junior tuned open D or G.

I'm using DR Pure Blues PHR-10

Love 'em! They really don't need stretching either. In fact they recommend not to do much stretching as it decreases their life expectancy.

My Junior stays in almost perfect tune for weeks @ a time. Amazing really.

The intonation thing is a whole other story however.

Re: Junior sitar issues....

HI! i use 11-52 in std. tuning! mine is fine after i clean the wraptail and change the strings, but after 5 minutes of playing it comes back! probably dirt. I've seen some guys making grooves right under where the strings take of, but thats way too radical for me! i'd rather buy a new tailpiece.
