Question Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

I think that this has come up before. So, sorry for any repetition, but has anyone used these tuners:

RS Guitarworks Online Store

They look good, but are they stable? I think someone said that there were serious QC problems with Kluson ... is that true?

Are they direct drop ins for historics?

Thanks guys ... I love this place.

Re: Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

They look pretty good, but from a quality standpoint they aren't very good at all. Unfortunately there aren't many choices when it comes to single line, single ring tuners.

I've had 3 or 4 sets. All but one set had some kind of flaw. This last set I got is ok...so far.

I don't know about the RS one's but I do have 2 sets of Gotoh Single lines that I got from crazy parts, one aged and one new. They look and work as good as the stock historic set. Crazy parts is offering sets with uncle lou tips already installed too a bit pricey but they are nice!

You SHOULD call Roy at RS. I believe there WERE QC problems with these tuners and that RS didn't offer them for a while.
I think the problems have been resolved and RS is now offering them again

BTW, I purchased a set of these in aged gold from the earlier batch and have had NO problems.
They do look VERY authentic to the real deal and are direct drop ins for historics.

Hey 59gibson - those gold Klusons look great!

I'll keep looking ... any other experiences with these tuners?

Re: Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

I have a set of double ring, single line tuners from RS. They're from the batch with almost yellow opaque tips. Tuning is smoother and easier to do on any of my other guitars, so I have no complaints there. The thing that annoys me is that none of the tips are aligned at the same spot on the shafts, so it looks a little funny.

This is an important point to be made. The poor quality of the Klusons is in no way the fault of RS. In fact, you are more likely to get a good set from them because they care enough to go through them and when they identify a QC problem they send them back.

Although I have not been overly impressed by Kluson quality, I do buy them and RS is the only place I will buy them from.

59gibson may be right that the quality issue has been addressed, because the last set I got have been ok.

I also have aged single line klusons with pre-installed Uncle Lou premium tips from crazyparts......I like them a lot. Tuning stability is good and they seem well made, at least on par with the stock tuners on the historics.

I didn't know about these. Are the Crazyparts tuners standard Klusons? What gear ratio do they have?

I don't even think those would be considered because there is so much "unvintage" about 'em.

FWIW - Kluson is not an actual company anymore...the current batch of tuners with Kluson packaging is actually made by (I think) WD.

Sorry, but these (Tonepros/Kluson) are NOT a direct replacement for the Historics. Even though the come with push-in bushings. They are advertized as being a direct replacement but they are NOT! You have to ream your headstock from the back to fit the casing sleve of the tuner in there. kinda like the typical Grover-Mod.

Ask me how I know............

I think itŽs 16:1 Their website is a little messed up right now. It does not show the correct pic for the tuners.

This is how they look BTW:

I've been told they are the Gotoh japanese versions and they are the same as the historics use just with a single line casing. I can def. say they hold tune fine. The regular sets come with the Green tips.

Ah yes. The Gotoh is definitely a superior tuner. I'll have to check those out.

No problem my friend. I also believed the advertising that stated "direct repalcement" Better to warn fellow MLP members before they drop the coin on these, and then discover they donŽt fit.
I originally wanted to put them on my R9 and install Uncle Lou Premium Tips on these Tonepros Klusons.
Good thing I tested if they fit BEFORE I started to put the tips on. Would have ruined a nice set of tips!

Re: Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

Does anyone else have the Single Line Klusons from RS Guitarworks?

They seem the most authentic I've seen without resorting to Uncle Lou's tips (which I can't justify)

I got the other set very reasonable price....

These are exactly the same tuners RS sells and aged (nicely) in-house. The tips are close to Uncle Lou's regular tips that sells for 40 bucks/set. Crazy parts (mine is in transit) uses the same tuners but puts Uncle Lou's premium tips, like Olli's ^^^

RS tips on my 356:

FWIW, I love my aged RS Kluson SR/SL tuners. The tips on mine are done nicely as well.

Re: Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

I just got both Crazyparts and http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT in the mail today and all I can say is: They are both identical tuners.

Good:

I like these set better than the stock Historic tuners because the worm drive shaft are a bit beefier and gear seems tighter.

Bad:

The very top shaft above the string hole are not flat... maybe not for those who like vintage correct or what not; but for 50 bucks, I'd say a great buy!

I just age it to match the rest of my parts.

I just bought a set of single line Kluson from RS guitar works, they are good quality and have the vintage look, I like them much better than the stock set I took off my R8, So far they hold tune great and have no problems, The look is close to the orig, the aged thing is good, the only thing I noticed is the tips are set a bit far out on the shaft.

Re: Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

I purchased a mint '08 R4 earlier this year which the previous owner had installed a set of the RS aged single line tuners on. When I went to change strings, the low E tuner was bad (stripped gears). I ended up replacing the RS tuners with a set of Gibson VOS Historic takeoffs. I've emailed RS a couple of times about a replacement (which I'm happy to pay for) and have heard nothing. At this point I've got a 5 tuner set that's pretty much useless. I like the look, but won't be in a hurry to buy another set........

I installed mine last night and I really like 'em

The color is so much better than the stock tuners, and they're really smooth too.

Re: Kluson Single Ring, Single Line Tuners

Unfortunately no, I went to bed too last last night as it was!

Hopefully I'll snap some tonight.

How long do you think it'll take for these tuners to age 'naturally'? They're too bright!
