Re: Show us your flat sawn tops

Come on Dano, that one is mostly quarter sawn.
You can do better than that !
Are any of those guitars yours by the way ?

Picky picky picky. Agreed, quarter sawn on the bass side, but flat on the treble. Check out the island surrounding the controls.

They are my guitars BTW. Life is good.

Wow, I am speechless ! That is an awesome collection you got there, my friend. Thank you for sharing ! Did you select them by their tops or was this a lucky coincidence ?

Well, since plaintops are fair game, I've also got this one with a big "eye" on the bass side.

Re: Show us your flat sawn tops

This one has some pretty insane flatsawn grain, but the flame makes it kinda hard to see. I'm showing a pretty large image to make it a little easier to see the grain.

Insane indeed, the grain is all over the place. It's a textbook example of the articles in Beauty of the Burst that Dano posted: "Both grain and figure become complex."

That one is wild ! Just look how the very fine quarter sawn grain in the center gradually open up into flat sawn ripples on the treble side. There's nothing gradually opening up on the bass side. The grain EXPLODES into those beautiful rings. Truly gorgeous !

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you share you technique for aging the inlays? I've installed HM inlays into a couple of my Historics. The first set came out perfect, actually too perfect, so on the subsequent set I tried to not be so exact about installing them, although they still came out too clean too looking. I did manage to get a little browning on the edges by using Duco glue, which melts the edges of the celluloid a bit and leaches color from the rosewood. Still, real inlays typically have lots of filler and are curled and shrunken.

Next attempt...

A little better...
