Questions on VOS Finish

I have a few questions on these finishes.

Are all of these low gloss and shine knocked off?

When they look aged are they really aged,if I get one will the nitrocellulose start to crack in a few years?

I have heard about Virtuoso Polish, is "Gibson's Restorative Finish Cream" anything similar?

If you polish a VOS the thin coat giving it its dull look will come off and it will become shiny like a Gloss finish... The Nitro Gibson uses these days is much thicker and slightly different from the earlier Gibson's so you may have to wait even longer for it to check... if its going to check at all!

Regards

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

I think the color of the burst, or paint finish has allot to
do with how "aged" the VOS makes them look.
I have 2 R0's, VOS, and they are not dull by any means.
They are NOT high gloss. I have han ebony 68 CS, its VOS,
and looks it. Very dull finish

No, the finish isnt going to crack/age any quicker on a VOS
than a gloss as far as I've ever heard.

Lots of folks around here like Maguires (i'm sure I spelled that wrong)
but you find it in the automotive section of just about any large store.

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

I polished out the VOS gunk on my R8 with Gibson Polish in the Orange spray bottle.
Although not as shiney as a 'Gloss' model it's pretty close.

Here is a pic shined up.

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

Even with some Meguiar's Wax NXT (I love that), the finish continue to have a dull look, but some shine appears (but not like a glossy finish) ! At least thats the conclusion I get when I polished some Custom Authentic finishes, but I think VOS is less dull than a Custom Authentic anyway, so maybes thats the difference in the result.

Cheers ...

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

kylehnewman, you had inquired about some more pics of my Bourbonburst with less glare.
The previous ones I posted as well as this pic are after I used Virtuoso Polish. I personally like the results as it is sort of somewhere in between gloss and VOS.

These pics are from Mark's Guitar Loft before I bought the guitar.

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

The gloss is usually more shiny than polishing a VOS yourself. The rougue and high speed buffing wheel is very effective, more so than hand rubbing with consumer products. VOS finish is nothing more than the final buffing stages skipped to save labor costs (while charging you the same price as a 2005 Les Paul that was fully buffed)

And the lacquer now has more plastic in it starting in 2006, and the finish IS thicker. Not as hard, a bit rubbery.

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

Custom Authentics were dulled after the fact and cost MORE than the gloss finishes. The gloss is now a $300 upcharge over VOS. Brilliant marketing ploy by Gibson!

I was wondering. Can you clean a VOS finish without removing the film?

But as VOS is only available on Custom Shop guitars you are comparing apples to oranges surely? The price differential can never come into it because a Les Paul Standard buffed or not is at a different price point to a Custom guitar.

I gotta say I prefer the VOS to the shinier version - particularly with older-looking hardware...

Mines shiny but not the $300 upgrade. It shines all over! I've heard about 'pink' bleeding?? No 'pink' on mine.

I have used Virtuoso on my R8 and it cleaned up just enough (which is what I was going for) but definitely not like the gloss model. I ended up with exactly what I was going for.

Re: Questions on VOS Finish

My VOS R8 has more shine then my Gloss R7 - after Gibson Pump Polish and Plant Waves Carnuba Wax.

In one of Gibson’s classic moments of waste-not-want-not, Les Paul Custom pickguards and pickup rings were used on a few 1957 Goldtops. The result is an elegant and very rare touch on a
classic Les Paul.

+1 I think it's ironic that it costs $300 less instead of more.

Good job, it looks great! Other polishes I've used or have heard feedback about, include Meguires car polishes and Virtuoso.

No matter how much you polish, they will never be quite 100% as shiny as gloss, but you also save $300 on the cost of a new one going VOS!

Exactly. And really does it need to be any shinier than that? It's not going off to boot camp.

Everyone's got their preference, but I really like the VOS once it is cleaned up and polished.

Remember how many people prior to VOS that wanted to get their new shiny guitars to age quickly, like a pair of faded bluejeans? Well Gibson has done this with the VOS series, and now some people want to go the other route, lol!

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

But really, I like the worn in look - it seems to fit the vintage styled instruments well.

Yeah, I was kind of joking around there. I completely understand people wanting their guitars to look shiny. I hate dents. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Personally, I've always though a little less shiny looks a lot better, even without any aged hardware. And I'm happy to pay $300 less.

Any one know whether Gibson has been shipping any 2009 model '58 reissues in gloss finish? Or are they only available as VOS?
