Which is worth more Lifton or Custom cases?

I have two reissues with the brown crap.....er I mean cases. I hate these. If I was to trade for 2 exc. condition black custom cases, how much if any money should the other guy offer?

Also, would that be a dumb move to dump the original cases?

Thanks!

Re: Which is worth more Lifton or Custom cases?

I'd just keep them and buy a Custom Historic case for taking places.

The Reissue Lifton's sell between $300 - $ 350

Love their look, but they do suck for protection compared to the
custom shop cases.

I used to keep an extra reissue Lifton around . ( Cool Factor )
Then sold it and have an original one.

Back to your question.
Depending on which custom shop cases ( Logo ) you have.
price can vary . $ $250.00 for older Logo and less for newer Logo.

which is worth more?

I think the Lifton is worth more $, but the Custom is worth more in protection.

Even better, buy an old Protector 1 for taking your guitars out.

Thanks guys, I'll just keep them. It's not like I will go out with more than 3 Les pauls at a time anyway......I think.

Re: Which is worth more Lifton or Custom cases?

I bought some cases directly from the company that makes Gibson cases. Ran me around $180 Canadian *3 years ago* for an almost identical case to what Gibson ships their guitars in *no Gibson USA logo*. I traded it to a friend for one of the brown/pink cases from 2000. He wanted a black case, and I don't care what it looks like. This case needs work though, but nothing a little glue won't fix.

I usually take 2 or 3 Les Pauls to shows with me. My favorite Custom always goes in its original Protector 1 case which has saved my butt more than a few times... If you can find one or 2 of these on Ebay I'd highly recommend them. Save the Lifton's for resale, or sentimental value.

I had both an Old Logo and New Logo Custom Shop Case (sold them on e-bay under "JoeShell1110" for about $185 each) and two Lifton Reissues. The Custom Shops BY FAR exceed the Liftons for protection, however, the Liftons give it the BOB (Beauty of the Burst) look and feel of owning a real burst. IMO, I would keep the Liftons and buy an ATA for gigging. I've never seen a Protector 1, but from what I read above, it sounds pretty good. Keep the Liftons and all the case candy, though. You never know when you're gonna see something new that you just GOTTA HAVE and you will get a better return on the Rs with all the goodies. Good luck, Joe

Re: Which is worth more Lifton or Custom cases?

Just a few pics of the protector style cases...

Protector 1 (70's):

Thinner, comfort grip handle, GREAT case!

Protector 2 (80's):

No comfort grip handle, 2.5 x larger than a normal case, hard to move around.

Probably great for the guitar but c'mon now... Its HUGE! Also fits SG's which is cool.

I have one of each of these. I try to leave the Protector 2 at home. Its hard to even put in my backseat.

Re: Which is worth more Lifton or Custom cases?

I have seen the old logo Custom Shop cases go for the same money
as the Lifton reissue cases. They are still making the Liftons, they
don’t make the old logo cases anymore. Soon I think the old logo
cases will sell for more.

Can you share a picture of the old logo you speak of. I'd like to see this.

Re: Which is worth more Lifton or Custom cases?

Actually there are 3 versions of the Custom shop case, the earliest version is the 1997-1998 version. It has a different grain, the logo is on the opposite bout, and more padding inside. They are worth the most, because they are much more rare, better built and offer even better protection.

I found a website (apparently a sub of MF) that sells the reissue Lifton cases by themselves (I bought another one myself to try Lefty Elmo's aging process-see other thread). I picked it up for $300 flat incl shipping. Anyone interested speak to Charles @ ext. 2451.

Gibson Les Paul Reissue case (brown Lifton) - LOW PRICES at WWBW

Then I bought an ATA Flight Case for ULTIMATE protection from here:

AFFORDABLE ATA ROAD CASES, amplifier cases, guitar flight cases, ATA Cases, musical instruments, road cases, flight cases, Mesa Boogie, Marshall, Fender, Ampeg, Line 6, Vox, Roland, Gibson, Paul Reed Smith, Martin, Yamaha, Mackie, Peavey, Bogner, Budd

Very reasonable Flight Case and very sturdy 1/4" Plywood (Not 5mm).
In addition, the foam is custom cut so there is no sliding around sideways like in the Gator G-Tour.

Hope that helps. Joe
