Low 'E' Hum (Feedback)???

I was round a mates house yesterday having a jam, all was going great, but during breaks from playing (no mater if I was wearing the Lester or if it was on a stand) after a very short time I noticed what sounded like feedback. This happened all evening, I thought it could be some sort of mains hum so I touched various parts of the guitar and found it only stopped when I touched the low E string, it happened regardless of what pickup was selected and only the one string. I have played around with the action to lower it a bit recently but I did not adjust the pickup height Could a pickup or pole being to close to the string cause this problem or has the wealth of experiance we have on this forum had this problem before and someone knows a fix......
Thanks
