Re: 50th anniversary R9 case

I asked a similar question. Apparently, some of the later 50th's to ship came with the CS cases rather than the Liftons. Gibson could have run short on the Liftons or they were tired of damaged guitars coming back. Liftons are pretty poor cases.

Re: 50th anniversary R9 case

Running out of cases makes sense but you'd think they'd reserve 500 Liftons for the anniversary models.
Gibson being tired of damaged guitars coming back doesn't make much sense. If that were true, then wouldn't Gibson stop offering the Lifton and let people who want one buy it after wards?

I doubt it. But, you would have to ask the people who have received a historic shipped in a Lifton with the rear strap knob broken out.

Re: 50th anniversary R9 case

I take it from what you say that this problem with a damaged rear strap button ic common ? I ask because there was some paint chipping around the strap button on my R9 , which of course came delivered in its lifton case , im glad to say that the fitting of strap lock buttons and a small washer has masked this !!

FACT: The reissue brown cases suck and do not protect the guitar well, just as the originals suck!!! But they do look cool and are period correct. FACT: Gibson has had to repair MANY brand new guitars with the bottom strap button pushed right into the bottom of the guitar 1/8" - 1/4". Some with less damage just have the finish cracked around the strap button. The bottom of the brown case has no good padding and even with the foam ring they install the damage can still easily happen. This type of damage has NEVER happened with the black case. The only way to prevent the damage is to remove the bottom strap button when shipping a guitar. Since 1999 I have seen at least 75 - 100 guitars with damage due to being shipped in the brown reissue Lifton cases.

So it would make PLENTY of sense to stop using the brown cases completely!!

In '99 when the brown case was introduced, the guitar was shipped to the dealer in a black case. And then when the buyer sent in the warranty, Gibson would then ship them the empty brown case.

Re: 50th anniversary R9 case

Very interesting Mark thanks for that ! i think i got off lightly , mind you if the washer and straplock didnt cover the damage entirely it would have went straight back !! I liked the guitar so much that i decided to keep it once i decided that it could be hid , shop did compensate me a bit too !

Got mine two weeks ago and has the exact minor damage! WTF!!
I hope someone who work for Gibson is reading this and do something... oh well, it's covered with strap locks now....
