50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
Hi does anyone know if the new 50th anniversary r9 only comes in gloss? So far they all look like boiled sweets to me (but with great finishes)....
but then again I think I may be the only person to prefer VOS...

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
From what I've gathered there will be 500 in Heritage Cherry & 500 in Heritage Dark Burst all Gloss.
Then the regular production 2009 R9's will be available in a VOS finish. I'm sure I'll hear about it if I'm mistaken but as far as I know this is how it is. |

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
I think it is 500 for USA and 500 for International sales (Japan taking priority) I would think there will be far more cherries than darks. Yes they will be all gloss (just like they were in 1959) VOS R9s will be NON 50th models in various colors.

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
500 total production is what I've heard from the people that I'm dealing with (who knows?). More HCSB than DB. Regular production in the standard VOS colours are to follow. When will the R0s start showing up? That's what I want to see. Anyways, wait for Gibson to pump out the 50th, and I'd guess your regular R9 will become available again.

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
For sure! Even if I preferred VOS over gloss (I don't really care for one over the other), I'd get the HCSB 50th and let it dirty up with regular play. That cherry colour on the 50th is amazing. I wonder if the 50th R0 will be more of a tangerine coloured burst?

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
So the 09R9 crapburst, I mean darkburst I played last week was $5999.00 at GC.
Are the regular Historic 09R9s going to cost the same price? Didn't Gibson take the 08R9 to $5699 for VOS and $5999 for Gloss last year? I find that very strange considering how much premium was put on the 50thR8 Anniversary, granted it was aged and flamey but still it was different enough to demand a higher price than a regular 08R9. So, where does that take us? A limited edition 50th R9 is the SAME price as their standard Custom Shop Historic 09R9 (in gloss)? And if the Historic 09R9 has the same appointments a 50th does, what exactly is the distinction between the two? That's just weird from a marketing standpoint (even for Gibson). Also, I have to believe that the Custom Shop Historics will come in Iced Tea, Washed Cherry, Lemon or Butterscotch, Brockburst? It too will have the non-wired ABR, knurly switch ring nut and the knobs positions that really didn't move, the top carve I personally can't see and a neck profile that I couldn't tell was any different than my R9. Maybe Gibson has decided to put the top shelf 2009's only in the signature series like the Beck, Bloomfield Page #2's? It doesn't look like the 09R9 50th is all that fancy after all. I was let down when the pics came out at NAMM, now that I think about the regular Historics I'm even more let down. Seems like Gibson REALLY missed literally a once in a lifetime chance to make something super special for the 50th anniversary of the Holy Grail of guitars. |

You should not pay more than this for a new one:

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
They did 20 updates on accuracy. So, I guess it is a big deal. The originals came in either HCSB (the only official color) or HDSB. And the originals all came in gloss. So I think Gibson did the right thing as far as color and finish on the 50th.

Re: 50th anniversary - the boiled sweet look
I feel a very noticeable difference between the 50th neck profile. They removed the shoulders and there is a very soft V that tapers off as you move up the neck.
