1958 vos vs. 1959 or 1960
Hi
Ive recently purchased a 1958 standard vos...great guitar, but i dont really feel comfortable with the fat neck. Im used to a slim taper on my 335. Today i tried a 1959 vos and it felt really nice, as in more comfortable then my 1958...so my question is: Those of you who own a 1959 or perhaps a 1960, could you please share some thoughts about them. compared to the 1958 Ive heard that the 1959 should be the best of the three. I cant figure out if I should just get used to my fat neck or return it and spend the extra bucks on a 1959 or 1960 cos there really is a leap in price between em??? ![]() Thanx

Re: 1958 vos vs. 1959 or 1960
Someone else will chime in I'm sure, but in general the '59 neck is similar to the '58, maybe a little slimmer. The slim taper necks are supposed to be on the '60 models. (They always vary a bit, but not tried any very recent models.)
My 2001 '59 reissue is comfy, but still on the chunky side compared to my 1990 standard (which has a lovely slim taper) or my LP Special RI (non historic). I you want a slim neck you really need to find a '60 reissue to try before you make any decisions. Definitely can't say the '59 is the "best", and they certainly shouldn't have the slimmest necks. There's a GORGEOUS (2005?) '60 reissue in the "what LP have you got" poll, which might whet your appetite... What Historic LP do you Own ?? Historic Headcount !! Liam |

Re: 1958 vos vs. 1959 or 1960
hey thanx man
Ill go and try a vos60neck one of these days, but its not that i have to get a really slim neck (which probably makes bending a little harder), its just that i think the 58 is maybe a little to chunky, and the 59 more comfortable and in between the 58 and 60...also for playing some jazz chords and stuff which i find a bit tricksy on the 58... |

It always used to be said that the guitars with chunkier necks had a better sound. Trouble is, if you don't enjoy playing a guitar, you won't play it. My guess is that if you've already found a guitar that feels comfier than your 1958 VOS, it's probably not the guitar for you. You have to fall in love with playing them as well as looking at them and listening to them.
My 1959 RI's neck is still on the chunky side, but I'm totally in love with playing it. Have you considered having a neck shaved to your personal preference? I'm told it's sacrilege, but I've done it to one of my Telecasters and never regretted it for a moment. Liam |

I agree with Liam here, and I think if you dont bond with that guitar, just try other Historics untill you bond with them better . I have one Les Paul neck that is slim taper, its a early 60 Re Issue Classic, Then I have another Les that has a neck between a 59 and 58 VOS I love them both

If you like the sliim taper of your 335, you might want to give the R0 a try.
I've been really liking the carves on the 2006 and 2007 R0s that I've been seeing lately. IMHO, they are closer to the real '50s necks that I've played, including '52, '53, several '54s, a pair of '55s, '56, '57 (probably about 3 conversions) and a real '60 burst. Also a couple of '59 335s. So far, the fattest '50s neck I've played has been on a Special, and it still wasn't as fat as most R7s.

Neck size is a personal issue. I have a 54, 58 and 59. The 58 has the smaller neck followed by the 59. The 54 has a fat chunky neck and now that i've gotten used to it I wish all my RI's had the same neck. I had a Historic 60 with the slim tapered neck and couldnt wait to get rid of it. I love fat necks and there is no question it adds to the tone. Be patient, play it and get used to the feel.

Re: 1958 vos vs. 1959 or 1960
After I went down to the store yesterday and compared both a 58, 59 and a60 and had been going back and forth between the three it suddenly hit me that while the 60 and 59 were great, they werent that much different or better then the 58 and maybe I was going ahead of myself...I think ill give my 58 some more time to get used to.
Thanx guys |
