2013 Historic specs from Mark's

Mark posted some of the 2013 changes on his web site. (I hope you don't mind my re-posting them here Mark! If so, let me know & I will ask the mods to take this thread down.) Here is what Mark posted:

NEW Gibson 2013 Custom Shop Reissue Les Paul Specs
(Item#474) The 2013 Custom Shop reissue Les Pauls are just being released and here is the list of cool changes to the appointments: Back to 1-piece rosewood fingerboards with real celluloid inlays, the neck set will now be done with Hide Glue, new vintage accurate truss rod with no sleeve, all guitars will now come with Custom Buckers for pickups, correct aniline dye in the cherry pore filler for the back color, new neck and body binding with a more accurate vintage color, new single line Kluson tuners, both the front and back colors have been changed on all goldtops, the gold color is more accurate and slightly green, the back color has a darker pore filler and is more of a walnut brown.

It made me wonder if Gibson will begin selling the Custom Bucker pickups separately. Also, will all of the 2013 models get the changes, beginning with the first serial numbers? Or will the changes be transitioned in. And what effect will these changes have on the makeover market? hmmmm.......things to ponder! Let's hear what everyone has to say!

Frank Pine has received info confirming that the Hide Glue is Hot Hide Glue.

Re: 2013 Historic specs from Mark's

I had to check the date there for a second, thought it might have been April 1st! Gibson providing multiple positive changes towards making the instrument more historically accurate... and making these multiple changes all at once... AND without altering something else negatively to offset it?

What is this madness?

Re: 2013 Historic specs from Mark's

Maybe another 2 or 3 years and they may be back to making their Les Pauls exactly like they did when they were greatest quality guitars that EVERYONE wanted to buy? Hint hint Gibson! I love the changes that they are making but in all honesty they should've never stopped doing these in the first place. They only give us 1 or 2 steps (process/features) closer to the original 50's Les Paul's a year because if they did them all at once they couldn't increase the cost of their reissues little by little (5% and up)a year. So these are little money squeezing teasers that will disappoint someone that bought a new 2009 "vintage correct" in 2015. But at least they're getting there.

My 2012 R9 will have to go now. It's a great guitar but that does it.
I'm now on a quest. I am TOTALLY getting a 2013

We will have to see the whole range of finishes they do during this year, they will still be using the same lacquer, we don't know if the inlays will be dead on to what the makeovers are offering, the red pore filler will it be dead on correct to what a makeover gives you? Etc.

Non the less changes are coming and change is good!

I think that may be the case, at least for the '13s on. I'm sure we'll still see people wanting refins in period correct nitro, and possibly some fingerboard swaps for Brazilian. But personally speaking, if these changes are, in fact correct, I probably wouldn't do anything but refins on my guitars going forward (for any '13s or later guitars, that is).

And kudos to Gibson...for a change!

Thanks for posting and to Mark for putting it up on his site.

If I'm honest, this might actually make me think more than twice on getting either CC7 or the Perry '59 if the 2013s aren't at a big upcharge to the 2012s.

Hello....since 2012, Gibson has been using the same Italian company with the same late 50's pattern that all makeover folks use. It's the same stuff.

But they look so different from what Dj or HM uses! Yes they are an improvement over 2011, but come on John, they don't look the part yet!

Side by side with a vintage instrument the inlays look the same.

Really?

Edit: Just check ebay that is incredibly full of 2012 examples for sale and yes they do look very similar, i guess the difference goes in that the other inlays are hand picked.

My bad!

Re: 2013 Historic specs from Mark's

More marketing drivel to sell more guitars. They COULD have just done all this from the very first Historic onwards....so why didnt they??

What other changes are they holding back until the next lot of changes is released?

Of course this is true, we all know it, but change is good and they have A LOT to amend from 2012!
