Re: quilted R9s
I'm a quilt slut so if I could find a lefty, i'd e all over. I'm working on a 59 quilt build right now.

Re: quilted R9s
sound incredible? not sure how quilt makes it sound better. Just go for the R8 or R7 or R0s unless you have money to burn. otherwise, I dont see the point in fancy tops.

However, if you like them, then I don't see any reason not to buy a good one. BTW, Quilt is a softer Maple; i.e. Western (e.g. Big Leaf) vs Eastern Hard Rock Maple, so IMHO all things being equal it will have an influence on the overall tone of the guitar. Cheers, Rudi |

Re: quilted R9s
Quilt tops definitely aren't as "tasteful" as a good realistic burst with just the right amount of flame. Maybe that's why I like mine so much...
![]() ![]() ![]() Next to the vintage goldtop, it's the definition of "in poor taste", but just the same, it's one of my favorites. It's a Wildwood spec R9, and I really like the pups in it also... |

Re: quilted R9s
I agree....but just the same, I like the spec's of a reissue in comparison with....say...an LP trad pro plus from the custom shop for example... And, (though there's no accounting for taste....mine that is, not yours) I also like the "bling" of a quilt top. So for me at least, I like that there is the option. So, discounting termonology, I think that they're cool.

Re: quilted R9s
I don't own any, remain neutral on them, some look killer.......
There was not any originals with quilt, but how close are the Re-Issues or Historic's anyway....... The newer Re-Issues are built on modern day platform, so I don't see any drawback in being accurate compared to the vintage ones...... |

Re: quilted R9s
I've seen some I like.
I would buy one if I had the 30 day period to make sure it was the one. Although gorgeous, I don't know if you'd be able to liquidate it quickly, w/o a loss, should you fall out of love. my 0.02....

Re: quilted R9s
I am with Skatterbrane, not on a reissue....They look good otherwise, I do prefer the ABR bridge to the Nashville if we were talking about Standards.

Re: quilted R9s
thanks for your feedback guys
![]() the hunterburst (not a reissue but one legend of a guitar) was (is) a quilted one as well... The Steve Hunter Burst / Slash Burst / Pre-A.F.D. Era **TRUTH REVEALED** ![]() I think that looks pretty cool... (not sure if I am allowed to embed this image here.... if not I will remove it ...but it comes from the thread above anyway)

Re: quilted R9s
it really would depend on the quilt. Generally I would say no as I prefer flame over quilt 98% of the time. The ultimate answer to the question should help you decide, did Gibson use Quilt tops in 59?

Re: quilted R9s
I tend to prefer flame too, but some quilt looks really nice. I wouldn't necessarily rule a quilt top out based on the historical accuracy factor if it were a phenomenal guitar.

Re: quilted R9s
I generally prefer flametops. But when you own as many guitars as I do, a little variety can't hurt once in a while:

Re: quilted R9s
Depends on what you buy an R9 for. Did you purchase one to mimic an existing 1959, or because the R9's (or R whatevers) are constructed more like the originals than current Standard production?
I bought my quilt because of the construction, the sound and looks. ![]() Since this pic was taken, I've had some Waterbrane (Skatterbrane here at MLP) double creme pups installed. It is a sonic monster...
