Hardware Comparision Thread

It would be nice if we could maintain a thread here (sticky
even?) that showed images of the various plastic parts that
are available to us now. This should be useful for determining
what color or fit or whatever piece you need when you are
looking to oufit your lp.

Please post comparison shots that include multiple versions
of the same part in one shot. It is easier to see differences
that way than it is with shots of a single guitar with whatever
parts on it, even if the guitar has before and after shots.

And since we all take photos differently, if there's already a
photo of a particular part in the thread don't worry about
putting another photo. The more the better.

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

great comparisons. everybody always comments on how the historic plastic's are off in colour, but i think they are sopposed to be the colour of guitar that was played day in and out on stage, and dscoloured. they work with the vos. just my opinion.

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

MCI on Gbase is out of business, anyone know of another supplier of decent repro brown backplates for an R7? The guitar has been refinished in the proper color, with original tuners, truss-rod cover, Historic Makeover inlays, and vintage clone parts, RS wiring, bumblebee caps, and my pickups of course...This is the last part I need to finish the guitar.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

here's a comparison of the historic switch ring (left) and the Historic Makeovers ring (right), difference in the nuts too. That was the one piece of plastic I had to change, just couldn't stand the color.

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

SWITCH TIPs

Here are some shots of Historic, RS, and Fatboy/VC tips. The color is Historic=mocca, RS=dark amber, Fatboy=light amber/yellow. I like the Fatboy tip best right now but have the RS within convenient reach for when I want a slightly different tone.

Has anyone else noticed the little dark areas at the tips of their switch tips? The last photo below shows the spot on each of these parts. I couldn't get the camera to get the necessary detail but there also appear to be two curved lines coming down out of each spot. :hmm

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

Can you guys give me an estimate of how much the cost would be to upgrade these parts to historic-looking? I like the parts on the historic LPs, not worn looking.I have a standard but hate the way the plastic is almond colored, I would rather go cheaper than 'more correct color':
Switch Washer and tip
Pickguard
Pickup Rings

Maybe if we add more examples of plastic this could be made sticky as a reference thread ???

Nuts:
I've used bone for years and lately made a nut out of the dog chew toy called nylabone because the 50s nuts were supposedly made out of nylon. RS Guitarworks has a limited supply of what appears to be the original nut material for sale and I bought two blanks. The second photo shows the color diff between nylabone and rs blanks pretty well. The nylabone is opaque, but the rs is moreso.

Nylabone installed:

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

Here is a comparison that shows the variability in RS tuner tip color:

Left is my R8 with RS single ring tunerswith tips that are very light yellow, opaque and soft, almost like rubber (?). (Not crazy about them... probably will get some Unlce Lou's)

Right is my G0 with RS double rings. I like the color and the texture.

Mike, is there that much variation in those two sets or is the second pic just washed out from the sun a bit?

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

...both sets are almost N.O.S. condition.the set on the guitar is more see through or swirly than than the other.I have a third real nice set, probably from '62 which are on another R0 which are greenish in colour.
I firmly believe that the colour and patinas, some almost '50 years later,is due to different batches of plastic used back then and how much they were exposed to handling, light, smoke, etc.
I have also noticed on Historic plastic that there are slight variances in colour. Some looks a bit pinkish, some looks a little more beige than others. This I would also attribute to different batches of plastic, which in the real world no matter how exact or computer coded they are would still have slight nuances from batch to batch.

Re: Hardware Plastic Comparision Thread

This photo shows two different sheets of cream plastic from WD Music. The sheet on the right is an older sheet which is a very close match to the color of the Vintage Clone pickguards. The sheet on the left is a newer piece of cream plastic which is much more yellow in color. This piece represents the material that WD currently has in stock.

In this photo, pickguard 1 is a Vintage Clone, 2 & 4 are (obviously) Historic, 3 is a lightly aged guard that I made from the older WD material, and 5 is an unaged guard I made from the older WD material.

This photo shows the contrast in colors

Here is my R7 and CR8 sporting a pair of Fatboy Rings and homemade guards made from the older WD material.

Here's my 2005 Murphy with Fatboy rings, poker chip, and Retrovibe pickguard compared with a 1960 Burst #0-0268
