is the neck/binding damaged on this one? or is this normal?

Does this look like damage to the neck / binding? Or is this normal?

Where the nitro/lacquer meets the binding, I don't know exactly how to explain.

Two different materials expanding and contracting at different rates with heat and humidity changes.

Causing a split.

My best educated guess.

Re: is the neck/binding damaged on this one? or is this normal?

On my i phone , it looks as though it's a lacquer crack , I can't see
the usual cracks along the frets though .
One would think the usual cracks would also be present if it's
a lacquer crack .

.... Note : the crack / check ..... ? ..... Seems approx. 1 mm away from
the binding .

That happens a lot with solid white necks as well, such as SG Customs.

Re: is the neck/binding damaged on this one? or is this normal?

Yeah, John, I've seen those before. Unless you can feel the board separation from the neck then it's a SER!OUS problem, otherwise it would blend just right on the vos mojo on that guitar..

If you can't keep the guitar in tune return it...

it seems like most people think it is not a crack in the wood. is that right? and it is more like checking?

Re: is the neck/binding damaged on this one? or is this normal?

I just emailed this to John, before realizing that there was a thread on it too:

"Regarding that neck/binding, I think it’s somewhat normal. I think what you’re probably seeing there is the actual line where the binding meets up with the neck. I’m guessing when they masked the fingerboard and binding to paint the guitar black, they left a little of the lower portion of the binding unmasked, so that the black paint would cover up the joint between the binding and neck. And over time, with the different rates of expansion and contraction between the binding and neck, a little crack in the lacquer has developed...not unlike lacquer checking. Of course, if it’s a guitar you’re considering buying, you’d want to verify that it is, in fact, just the lacquer, and not an actual separation between the fingerboard and neck."

It looks like simple finish cracking. I've seen stuff like that before, but I'm surprised it's not on the seam.

eta: Just saw the above post, makes good sense.

The guitar is half way across the country; so it would be hard to get it checked out.

Re: is the neck/binding damaged on this one? or is this normal?

My '83 LP Custom has that all the way around the headstock and in places on the neck. In person, it sure looks like fracture in the finish from the wood expanding and contracting from changes in heat or humidity.

I've owned a B7 and an OBG black custom. Both had that and played flawlessly. I wouldn't sweat it myself.

^^ Except that indicates someone didn't care about keeping the humidity levels even close to proper for their guitar!

One of my Historic Customs (2003/2004) checked at the binding exactly like that. It's only cosmetic.

I noticed a small thing like this in the cutaway of my R8 as well. It's only about a half inch long though. I'll post a pic if I can get a decent one.....

No chipped paint and no wood exposed but in the right lighting I think I see a hairline crack in the finish along the seam.

Off topic a bit but do you know what kind of tape they would use?

Thanks,

Indeed it did/does (if you're referring to mine). Has no negative impact on the playability or tone whatsoever. Just adds to the mojo. She's structurally sound as a rock. I adore this guitar!

Re: is the neck/binding damaged on this one? or is this normal?

The guitar in question is a Jimmy Page Black Beauty LP Custom from 2008. Here is a shot of the neck of a different guitar, also a Jimmy Page Black Beauty LP Custom from 2008. It has the same "crack" running the length of the neck. I think it is natural as mentioned above by several people. Frank nailed it.

I am surprised you are considering buying this but passed on another only because it was missing a piece of plastic. For that reason, pass and wait for the right one to come along.

My newer custom has that same finish check - and it plays great. That JPP custom does look really cool.
