Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

OK, so there have been loads of threads and posts about the G0 so I thought that once and for all we could start a thread covering the Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Historic Reissue Les Paul or as we've all come to know and lover her the G0.

So lets include as much information about the guitar that we can (build, body, finishes, top, the electronics, the neck, the hardware, and of course photos and videos, and anything I've left out).

Here's what little I know:
  • She's based on a 1960 Les Paul that was in the Hollywood Guitar Center.
  • Not 100% sure about this but I believe the first ones were produced in 2002 had burstbuckers 2 and 3. Changed to 1 and 2 in 2003.
  • Serial number designation G0 **** starting in 2004.
  • Solid Mahogany body with a maple plain maple top. There are rare instances of G0's with figured tops.
  • Mahogany neck.
  • Rosewood fret board.
  • Long neck tenon.
  • Most iterations have Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups. The latest models apparently have custom wound Burstbucker pickups made especially for the G0.
  • Since early 2010 the G0 has come with phase switch, coil-split, and killswitch electronics. Thanks to Benton Cummings at Gibson for the info.
  • Amber top hat knobs (some might have come with reflectors)
  • No knob pointers.
  • Kluson tuners - there is some fluctuation between single ring and double ring.
  • Holly headstock veneer, period-correct binding (according to Gibson)
  • Finishes - Most models came in the iced tea/honeyburst finish. A variety of finishes have been used on later models (Goldtop, Dark Burst/Tobacco Burst, etc.)
  • Cherry red back

I know I've probably missed alot of information and mistated some, so feel free to add and correct where needed. Oh, and post your pictures too.

Here's some pics.

Nice collection, and looks like another wrinkle in the specs. Your goldtop and dark burst with flames have knob pointers.

Re: Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

Hi! Mine is the second one made out of the initial run of Five in 2002. It came with BB1& 2. Mine has a Birdseye Top and a Braz fingerboard (but not documented by Gibson). It came in what was called "Takburst". The first one and mine were noted as "Presentation Guitars" and arrived at GC Hollywood on the 18th of Sept. 2002. They were flown out and had their own seats on the plane. The other three guitars were shipped by FedEx.
I sent it to Historic Makeovers last year:

Here's how it looked when I first bought it way back when:

BTW, it came with double ring Kluson repros.

I'll chime in with mine...a 2007 G0 Darkburst...the best Les Paul I've played..Mine has the knob pointers, not sure if they were factory or added by the previous owner...here goes:

Re: Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

For the longest time (I think '02-'09) they were only available in just two finishes:

-Tak Burst (the original)
-Darkburst

Some of the later Tak Bursts looked more like Lemonburst and were often called such.

Re: Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

An important and often asked question. The differences between an R0 and a G0. As with many of the custom shop reissues there are variations.
  • The R0 has a flamed top and the G0 has a plain top (there are exceptions).
  • The R0 has knob pointers, the G0 does not (exceptions).
  • The R0 has reflector knobs, the G0 has amber knobs (again there are exceptions - 50th anniversary run, etc.).
  • The G0 from 2010 on has the coil splitting feature.
  • There are variations between single ring and double ring tuners.
  • The large majority of G0's came in the iced tea/honeyburst/tak burst finish. There are currently a wide variety of colors that the G0 comes in.
  • Serial number designation, R0= 0 ####, G0= G0 ####.

Re: Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

G0's (at least the earlier ones) don't have the same electronics (pots & caps) found in most other Custom Shop LPs.

G0's, even though the serial number is designated "G0" have the "R0" stamp inside the control cavity.

Re: Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

The first two years 2002 and 2003 they were NOT G0s! They were a limited run of R0s for Guitar Center. They had the "Custom Authentic" treatment through 2005. The finish color was originally known as "Takburst".

Here is an official model designation for a 2003 Guitar Center R0:

03101 LPR0PTKBNH1 LP 60 Plain Top

Les Paul Reissue 1960 Plaintop Tak Burst Nickel Hardware 1st quality.
P = Plaintop (not PT)
and TKB = Tak burst.

Had they never made a 2004 model, they would have never been called G0s by laymen (forumites). In 2002 and 2003 the serial numbers were intermixed with the normal figured top R0s. In 2004 they got their own serial number sequence because they became separate models, not just a special run like they were in 2002 (5 were made) and 2003 (48-50 were made) One or two of the 5 made in 2002 had BRW.

Thanks for the great info.

Hopefully this thread can answer alot of the questions that come up concerning the G0's.

i'm not calling you out, but if Gibson didn't document it, did you have someone else verify the species of rosewood?

This thread is awesome. I a huge fan of the RO/GO due to the neck sizes. Have owned oxbloods, R7s, etc.. but keep coming back to the RO/GO series. Love these guitars!

Huge thanks to GuitarHack for this thread.

Ok, I will play. Here is mine. G0 7001. The first one made in 2007. Maybe the first one plek'd, with factory bumblebees and Cts pots stock. They didn't do this before 07. She is all killer and no filler. If anyone has one pre 07 that is all historic spec from the factory, can you please let me know?

G0's must be keepers, don't see too many up for sale - not like they're big brothers the R0, which are plentiful, assuming one has the scratch to lay out for one.

Here is your opportunity to acquire one. Any love for the darkburst's out there?

It's actually the other way around. ROs are seldom seen on the classifieds here and places like the gear page. Bit there are always a couple of GOs floating around.

Re: Everything G0 - Guitar Center Exclusive 1960 Reissue Les Paul

I may be wrong here, but if memory serves me right, The template for this model was a thinner necked 59.Page 120 of B.O.T.B. to be exact.Owned at the time by Guitar Center. They sent that guitar and Gibson took exact measurements. The finish on page 130 was inspiration for the darkburst, but the neck and body was still based on the first guitar.. Maybe I am taking out of my ass.I looked for the thread I remember reading years ago last night, but could not find it.I think the same link stated that the first three had Braz boards and really nice flametops. That may be folklore, as none of them ever turned up. If any one could find that link,it has a ton of info and great G0 porn.

Here's my 2007...lots of upgrades including Sheptones, truss rod cover, offset tailpiece stud, poker chip, switch nut and switch tip all from Retrospec, caps and pots from Jonesy, aged Kluson tuners, aged Monster Relic reflectors, MojoAxe pickguard and Gil Yaron rings. Was fun to upgrade it slowly. Sitting next to my Phaez:

mine

great guitar with a bit fatter neck than any other R0/G0 I've played. About like a mid 90s standard.

Had it refin in nitro and it did improve the sound....and it checks...

Just checked mine again, they are definitely black. It's a 04 so maybe Gibson started using tortoise color in later years. Or they ran out on mine...

I think you have the special run of 25 that had the black dots your guitar just went up in value.

Edit, I can be such a dumbass at times. I didn't fully read your post, TM1.Kind of surprising to see such a rare guitar refinished, but it looks fantastic. Thanks for posting.
