I look at it this way. If you can afford to do it, then do it right! Nothing feels better than holding your LP, knowing you took your time to find "the one"; it's a lovely feeling as well as being mondo inspirational.

That's just me of course.

thats the feeling I have with my 98 epi les paul custom took me 8 months to find her. If i can find a regular les paul custom in white for under 1800, then Im willing to put the time and effort into getting the pups, pots etc replaced to make it what I want. Somehow putting time, effort, and money into a guitar makes it harder to part with than just going and buying one. Im still in my early 20's, so perhaps my taste in Les Pauls will mature over time. right now, a white one with wb pups, an RS kit, some light neck sanding, and ive got me a keeper.

Oh, and sorry about the major picture thread derailment

Right on dude!

Some would say I was completely MAD when I modded my 1969 LPC BB back in 1993! Changed ALL the hardware, PUPs, and even put all new frets... Fretless Wonder to Jumbo!

Who knew 15-16 years later I could sell that same 1969 LPC BB for $20k if it was stock and in near mint condition?

Then again it didn't matter because when I was 25 years old all I was interested in was making my guitar sound the way I wanted it too!

Bummer you had to sit through the youth soccer game and missed out on your adventure for the weekend... there's always next weekend!

I was searching the depths of ebay for '68s last night. There's a bunch of tri-bursts, one black, one firemist, and no white.

The price is up to; now they're selling the '68 RI at $3899.00!
Cripes 7 months ago I paid $3499.99 for mine!
I got mine in 2007 and paid $2929.00 with HSC, they ring them as extra. How can they go up that much?

Like Bole mentioned, the big chain stores you can usually get a good deal
on a Studio, Standard, but the RI's, not so much. IMO
I got my ebony for a flat 3 mom & pop shop - same as alot of
guys here that have 68's.

Yeah, it was a little over 3 after taxes and overnight shipping. Nowhere near $3,800! Jeeze..

Re: Let's see those 1968 Reissues!!

I bought my R8 from GC because they sent me a coupon for 10% off one item, excluding a boatload of brands but Gibson was not excluded. I got a brand new one back in June for $2670 or close to that amount, the guitar was marked $3099 but was an 07 so they cut a little better deal. They sent me at least 4 of these coupons in the last year with their sales catalogs. So if all you have is a GC close by see if you can get one of their coupons.

Re: Let's see those 1968 Reissues!!

I was just in GC Sunday the prices on these RI's and Historics are getting SICK!

I admit after taxes I paid around $3600 for my '68, which really isn't that bad IMO... $400-$600 more is nothing to sweat. I could drop that much at a casino in about 20 minutes anyway, at least I have a fine axe to show for it!

But the Historics are out of control with the prices!

The very same G0 I purchased on July 4th in almost the same finish was going for a list price of $5799.00 or $5999.00 I forget which but either is way too HIGH considering I paid $2400.00 and some change after taxes for the same axe 4 months earlier!

I just don't understand what justifies such a huge price jump like that in 4 months?

Re: Let's see those 1968 Reissues!!

I dont understand the dramatic price hike either.
I know GC went under new ownership recently,
maybe that has something to do with it?

With the economy and everything else, you would
think that would be the last thing a big chain store would do.

Wow. I guess I was very lucky when I got my tri-burst. I only have about $1800 worth of trades: a Colt 6920 AR-15 Carbine and my LPVM for his 2007 like-new tri-burst.

Re: Let's see those 1968 Reissues!!

Why anyone would buy one of these from GC... You're gonna pay $1,000 too much, teenagers have played it about a million times, and GC can't get the good stuff. Why does the dude from GC say that they don't make them in white? It's because they don't get them in white.

Please, somebody help me wrap my brain around this shit, because brother Hemp, you paid too much. Why anybody still buys guitars from that horrid place is beyond me.

An '08 quilt top, in a color that I've never seen, for 3 grand...

I talked to my bud at GC last night he told me "yeah obviously they make the '68 LPC RI in white... but we don't carry them, they may have been a special run for some other dealer"? Then he quickly pointed out the knobs on the one Boles posted up from Jeff's Guitar Vault were wong for the '68 LPC RI. I'm like, yeah dude speed knobs but ummm I've been telling you more about Les Pauls and YOU'RE the one who is running a GC! He's still my homey though!

I hear ya Boles and I appreciate you thinking I paid too much but I have a couple issues... well I don't know if they are really "issues".

First off, I just can't wrap my brain around ordering an axe and not playing it first. There's something about seeing it, and holding it, and playing it. Maybe it comes from my age? Back in the day when I wanted an axe I went to the local Music Store not opened a catalog or opened a browser. Secondly, no way I would trust any of the current delivery companies to handle such a transaction ( I know this is how the music store gets its inventory); I know others have had no problems, but its just an individual thing again I guess?
No way any delivery person could leave a new axe sitting on my front step, not where I live, and no way I would want the axe hanging around a cold, damp warehouse waiting for me to pick it up.

Finally, if I'm doing OK financially I don't mind dropping a few extra bucks in the deal as long as it means someone who I consider a friend will benefit from that deal. My GC Homey has been able to secure some nice axes for himself thanks to my purchases and he has no problem admitting that... but then in turn he helped me too find some seriously nice axes for my collection. It's all good! If I didn't have the bucks to lay out I would have no problem telling him that. I'm sure if it was something that he knew I really wanted we could work out a deal between "friends".

I consider myself very lucky, I have a cake job that I charge ridiculous sums of money to do... and get it! I'm just sharing the love among friends!
Better I spend this money for axes than throwing it away in Atlantic City like I have done for many, many years!

Re: Let's see those 1968 Reissues!!

If we were talking about "Rs", then I would understand. I've played some horrible excuses for Pauls labeled as R4, 6, 7, 8, and 9. They crank the damn things out like candy.

When it comes to '68 reissues, I've played about 20 of them, and they were ALL awesome! That's why I don't have to play it first.

It doesn't really matter to me anyway, because if the guitar has a certain quality I don't like, I just change it. I do my own set-ups and pickup changes. I've never played a bad '68, even from the dreaded GC. I've never had to do anything besides change the plastic on one of them.

At this moment in time, I would order any '68, in any color, sight unseen. When I play a bad one, then I'll worry about it. If it was so bad I couldn't fix it, then I could just send it back and get another. All for much cheaper than "the store"..

Ya Hemp, you need to quit gambeling
I need to quit going to Vegas, I usually do about
2-3 grand worth of people watching
cuz I dont gamble. YA RIGHT!

I like the idea I can pick up 68's, R0's, etc. from
the dealership I get them from that are unique - per say -
to what's available in the chain stores.

People are always going to visit & buy from the GC, MF, etc. (IMO)
because of the selection, in-stock. Rather than ordering, and
waiting 4-6 weeks. And the fact that they dont know any better.
I use to be on of those people.

to each there own. I would hate for "everybody" and there brother to
start buying from the place I buy. I'd drive down, walk in, have less
of a selection to chose from. maybe?

You are absolutely right I have never played a bad '68 RI either, granted all that I've played have been in GC.

While I used to do all my work myself set-ups, PUP changes and other electronic changes I've gotten lazy. I plan on getting back to that evenutally but for now I get "fringe benefits" with tech jobs because I spend money at GC. I'll even let the store tech take my LP's home with him so they aren't touching all the other shitty guitars in the store! That makes him happy which in turn makes me happy.

I suppose if I really worked on myself I could think about ordering a LP and waiting the 4-6 weeks to get to me! I do buy strings on the Internet!!! Who knows, I may be doing just that to get myself one of those Classic White '68 LPC RI's? Hell, I was considering ordering a Custom LPC from the Custom Shop until I heard it would most likely be a 1 year wait! But I'm not buying anymore guitars LP or otherwise until after the New Year.

Yeah being about a 40 minute drive from Atlantic City has been very dangerous indeed!
While I never go over my limit that I set for myself I have been known to walk in with $5-6k in my pocket and NOT LEAVE UNTIL IT WAS ALL GONE! That's my problem! But even when I win all that means is "its time to grab a room" so my day trip has now turned into a couple days and I eventually give it all back to them anyway... a couple of times I left with my winnings and used them to purchase an axe, but only a couple times!

The only thing I can consider a Mom & Pop Music store in my area is the same place that when I was a kid wouldn't even let me get near the guitars unless I showed them the money in my pocket! Frigg them, they will never get a dime from me!

One of the Psychiatrists that I used to work with would always talk to me about gambling. He would want to know exactly what I felt during the games and would really pick my brain about the whole gambling experience! Right before he retired he told me I should consider Specializing in Gambling Addiction because of my connection with it... I am considering doing just that as I am getting real tired dealing with junkies!

Re: Let's see those 1968 Reissues!!

I've got a '68 Custom reissue at the place where I work. It's got a 5A flame top in firemist which is a very orange and red 'burst. My co-worker really wants it but fuck it's expensive.I think it retails for $13000 AUD.Supposedly it's a one-off as well, that's what i've been told by management.
