quick price check on new R8

I can pick up a brand new 2008 R8 in ice tea with a 3A pinstripe. The price is $3150 out the door. Plays and sounds great. Is this a good deal? Should be back at the store in an hour.

Would you pull the trigger? Wife actually gave the ok, but I hate these decisions, especially done I already own 4 other Les Paula.m.

Re: quick price check on new R8

I paid that much in 2002 for my 58 figure top. Sounds good if you like the way it plays and sounds.

Re: quick price check on new R8

very fair for a new flame top R8..plaintops go for 2650-2900+ new...so a few bucks more for flame is more than fair.

Enjoy the new guitar !

I am sure you will love the R8, best historic bang for the buck in my opinion

A 4-year old "Brand new 2008 R8" for $3150 sounds like too much $$$ to me...
I have bought all my Gibson Les Paul guitars (two R8's) pre-owned.

My first R8 plaintop (2006-model) for $2100.
My current R8 2002 Flametop was bought from a MLP member for only $2600.

The question I always ask myself is if it's a good Historic why the feck is the owner selling it?

Re: quick price check on new R8

Well I missed getting the guitar. I got to the store 5 minutes after closing and they wouldn't open the door. No prob, there will be others that will show up on the Gibson Les Paul side... . But in case you were wondering, Sam Ash had it's 88th Anniversary sale today and the guitar was i Paramus, which is closed on Sunday. I thought I could make it back to the store after picking up my kids, but traffic killed me.

In my case, the MLP member had two R8 flametops and was about to put it on eBay, but sold it to me first...

Re: quick price check on new R8

Hey man, I saw a thread on here that somebody contacted Gibson Custom Shop directly about 5 years ago and got an R8 for like $1800!! I would love to:

1) get those contact deets myself and find out:
2) if they'll stil sell to individuals
3) for what price
4) if I can return/exchange if I don't vibe with it (or if I could fly to Gibson Custom Shop and try a couple side by side and leave with the one that sings to me)

dude, GC and sam ash are where you go to try out the guitars you like to order online from real music retailers with better prices and untouched stock. I know both paramus GC's and the sam ash. They'd never get a high end purchase from me.

I have been tracking the sales of R8 flametops on eBay since I got mine.
They normally sell in the $3,000-$3,500 range.
I really like the R8 extra thick neck.

Re: quick price check on new R8

Plaintops are going (not asking, going) for $1900 - $2200. Figured R8's for maybe $300 - $400 more.

I think the guitar is over priced.

Wow man $1,900-$2,200 is amazing, the seems like the kinda price of
getting them direct from Gibson. Any ideas where else might sell for that price? If I can find somewhere, it might be my first ever proper NGD!

Ah, the exciting journey this is!

Ah, 2nd hand prices. You confused me, sir! ( easily done ) I thought you meant 'asking' was the tag price on stores and 'going for' was what people were actually walking away with e.g. tag price on a 2012 std is $2,600 but folks have been getting them for $2,124 from MF...
I'm on the look out for the equivalent on buying a new R8...

thanks man

Re: quick price check on new R8

I always hear about these low purchase prices from the posters on this site, but I have been watching the Ebay prices almost daily for a year now, and they are rarely ever as low as what people on this site claim. I have also contacted Wildwood and Eddie's, I have not come up with a reissue flame top under $4000 yet, and most are much more money than that. So what's the secret password, I'm due for a nice flame top!

Call these guys to see what they can do on the price:

Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Les Paul Reissue | Dave's Guitar Shop

Maybe get him to let this out the door for under $4k?

Agreed, there's a few people here that love quoting those ball buster kinds of prices. Sure they happen once in a blue moon. But you could go a year and not find a plaintop R8 for $1,900 on any of the forums or eBay. Kind of a disservice if you ask me.

I agree on this point generally speaking but I'm 99.9% certain that a user on these very forums got a 'ball buster' price legitimately by buying direct from Gibson Custom Shop... wasn't a flame top though...

Re: quick price check on new R8

True to the title of this thread and ignoring all of the talk on 2nd had prices, I wonder what the cheaper-end of the price range is fot R8's new - I am seriously considering making an R8 my first proper guitar but can't find the answer to this question anywhere! I feel like I've read the equivalent answer 100 times for a 2012 Standard ($2124) but not for a 2012 R8....

anybody ?

Re: quick price check on new R8

Folks got to remember that back in 2008-10 used prices hit a low point. Prices are on the upswing, at least the asking prices are on the upswing not so sure about the actual selling prices.

Back in 2010 a 1998 R8 flametop was sold to me for $2075 (due to the lousy economy)! These days USA Standards that are flamed go for that and more.

Re: quick price check on new R8

Musicians Friend, Sam Ash & ZZsounds all have their brand new R8's listed for $3,700 which, with 15% discount, free shipping and no tax comes in at $3145.

So, is $3145 the 'rock bottom' price for getting a brand new 2012 R8 or does anybody know any big retailers or little mom & pop stores that could significantly beat that?

OR - as aforementioned - does anybody know if it's still possible to get in touch with Gibson Custom Shop direct and get a badass low price from them?

The answer to this will no doubt leave me with some heavy pondering...

Peace

Leo
