VOS. Bad, good or great
So, I get the feeling that most people don't like vos lp's, and I don't know why, so, you like them or not?
ps.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
Since VOS only applies to Historic guitars you might get better results posting in the historic section rather than the normal Gibson section.
I don't see the problem with VOS, they're slightly cheaper than their gloss counterparts and if you don't like the patina on the finish you can polish back up with virtuoso polish.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
I have two VOS guitars. A little polish and they look (and play, with the VOS film off the necks) marvelous.
And they beat the living hell out of those artificially-aged ratbags that still, somehow, have people having to reel their tongues in from off the floor.

VOS. Bad, good or great
What's up with VOS lp's. I get a feeling that most people don't like them. So, are they bad, good, or great.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
I have no complaints about my two.
A little polish and they look (and play, with the film off the necks) wonderfully. And they beat the living hell out of those artificially-aged ratbags over which enough people, for whatever reasons, are still reeling their tongues off the floor . . .

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
Checking the other, identical, thread I have to ask if you really mean to be asking about VOS or if you're asking about Historics in general. Your other thread is stacking them up against USA models.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
I love most all the VOS LPs I've played, but I love a lot of LPs, even studios.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
I got tired of trying to keep my Gloss finiish guitars glossy. Apparently I sweat acid. So, I bought an R9 VOS and never regretted it. Whatever Gibson puts on them to make them look aged, reacts with my sweat to really enhance the aging process. I like it, but I understand others don't.
At least Gibson, for all their other faults, does charge less for VOS than Gloss. Fender is the opposite. You will pay at least $500 more for a Closet Classic, and even more for Relic finish. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
Not better, or worse. Different.I like having the extended neck tenon.I am also a fan of the Abr-1 bridge. In my opinion, this is better. The whole point is to get a Historic a bit cheaper than a gloss, and get the look of a broken in player. The V.O.S. finish can be buffed out.I have had two, and disliked the finish on one and loved the other. When guitar players get enough experience, they begin to build their style. In order to feel comfortable with that style, the begin to build a list of prerequisites that their gear should have. There have been Standards that are on par with the custom shop or even better.I have played some great ones, some with fantastic tops as well. I owned a 58 V.O.S. that was a real dud.I mean it SUCKED in comparison to others I tried.I traded her for my baby and never looked back. We have to look beyond our stereotypes and look at each example on their own merit. You could be losing a great opportunity to save some casholla and really bond with a winner. I prefer the neck,at least to be polished.Just me.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
Yes. VOS models look more worn in (lacquer finish is "softer," nickel probably looks a bit oxidized, etc.).
VOS means Vintage original spec, and they are historically correct

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
first of all i liked the VOS look more than the glossy, sometimes glass like surface. A/B-ing in the store gave me the impression that the VOS were a little bit more vibey, open sounding but i don't claim that to be the rule. That was maybe just the guitars in that particular store i was in.
The little sticky whatever on the neck completely dissapeared in some hours of playing and now the neck is really smooth with a very thin laquer coating and yes, same with mine, the aging starts already. Neck is starting to fade a little and also the aged hardware looks nice to my eyes. But i am no fan of shiny part anyway, so VOS is just great for me. On the other hand i really adore some pictures shown here in the forum with high glossy guitars, buffed up to a ultra gloss which seems to reinforce the color, flames and grain. At the end of the day it comes down to a matter of taste |

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
He got it right. VOS means they are built like they were way back in time....like in the 1700s.

Re: VOS. Bad, good or great
OK, so I don't quite know what it means, but that is not what this thread is about. I am not planning to get one, so why should i know what it means.
