My 50th Anniv Murphy getting a make over

This is my 50th Anniv R8 Murphy aged RI that I tried to further relic and totally screwed it up...so I shipped her off to Historic Makeovers last October.

The day I shipped her out for the makeover

A few months later here are some progress pics

original finish removed

top re-carved to the correct 50's shape

base paint applied

tan lines painted

after in the Florida sun for several days to fade the outer edges

I requested a lemon burst but somehow there was a mix up and it got a ice tea burst

Kim said its more brown like in this indoor pic

Kim offered to strip and repaint per my original lemon burst (like Goldie) idea but I dig it so I told him to keep it and move onto relicing phase

Hey GB, I also like it like this. I love a great Lemonburst but an Iced Tea Burst is also awesome. Looks great so far.

Way cool of you to just run with it.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the outcome.

Message to Nico...................I hate seeing these Threads because it makes me very tempted to send 1 of several that I have for a Makeover.........just for the hell of it.

Re: My 50th Anniv Murphy getting a make over

I thought that the makeover guys painted all cherry and then let it fade, not just the shade areas 0o... Does they make a "new-old-stock" look too? Or just faded/relic/etc?

Honestly I'd say if you have a great sounding base guitar..... DO IT! I'm actually amazed how good mine sounds..... I am kinda honeymooning but it is awesome and I wouldn't just say that..... I have a '58 custom and I thought it would be the last LP I bought until a burst, and I like most of my historics better! so not the $ talking. I already want another one, damn it!

That and Kim says its only 4 months right now...... you'd have something else to play till your Italian Job is ready..... other than that stunning Barlett that is!

Doug, I used to be indecisive...................but now I am not so sure.

I know what I will do, I'll shoot you an Email with the ones I am thinking of doing. Probably a CR8 & an R9...........both from 2007. Let me know what you think. I'd be interested to know what Kim thinks as well.

BTW, how does your Makeover compare to your RH / IT Replica?

Cheers, Rudi

Re: My 50th Anniv Murphy getting a make over

today the Les Paul logo was silk screened

serial number reapplied and I decided to go with relic'd nickle tuners instead of the chrome shiny ones

Also finalized the plastic and decided to go with a few aftermarket parts (including knobs) to give a vintage vibe...

here she is before heading off for relicing/distressing - yes I am paying someone to beat her up...crazy I know but I like it

Re: My 50th Anniv Murphy getting a make over

Am i right in thinking that there are two individuals who spray the bursts at the makeovers, and that they have distinctive styles?
