P90 Reissues

OK - I'm dumping my strat which I just cannot get to work for me and jonesing for something with P90's and figured I go with another reissue. I'm not a big fan of gold tops but again I'm not much for what a guitar looks like anyway as long as it plays well and has a great sound.

Which reissues have the P90's? which would you guys get and why? I value all the different opinions so go for it.

57 Jnr reissue. Used mine last night at band rehearsal, killer guitars and sound and not nearly as squealey as my Esquire. Epiphone do a version and there's also the Tokai and Burny route.

epiphone custom lp & gibson 50's tribute studio lp.jpgI don't know the difference between a RI and a tribute but the Gibson 50's tribute studio and the 60's tribute studio both have P90's. I own the 50's tribute and I just love the tone of the P90's through a tubed Marshall. And after some quick re-setup work, the guitar plays great!!

Re: P90 Reissues

Man, I’m getting more and more confused on this P90 thing. I was just schooled by a knowledgeable senior member of this forum saying the contemporary P90s are P100s and actually have an addition coil. I was also told by another a member of this forum the “P90s” they are loading contemporary Gibsons with are the same from the Custom Shop to the Faded series – that, currently, there’s no such thing as a VOS P90. I have a 2010 Special with the long neck tendon and an ebony board and what the website is calling a P90 and, for an off-the-rack Gibson, it plays and sounds nice. But a few folks here have told me the new P90s aren’t remotely the same as the originals. Having never owned a guitar with vintage P90s I can’t tell but I would love to get to the bottom of this. Just seems odd to me that the pickups in a $699 Faded Special are the same as what’s in a $2,200 VOS Special.

I'm just a little biased toward the one I happen to own . . . 2007 R6 . . .

Resonant. Cries like a baby when you play her through Fender amps, especially when you run both pups together. Lovely fat bat neck. And this one's not a bad looker, either!

The difference is that the Reissue is supposed to be much closer in design to the original guitar, as opposed to the tribute which is more of a nod towards a certain guitar.

Oh, and Reissues cost 5 -10x more.

Pics.

Take the bloody cover off and take a picture. Then circle the "addition[sic] coil". Post it here. LOL

Re: P90 Reissues

All modern Gibson's P90 are the same part number/model, whether they are in Custom Shop guitars or regular USA guitars, whether they are neck or bridge. Gibson ALSO used to make a P100 which looks like a P90, but is a stacked coil humbucker. There was a time when the normal USA guitars used the P100, and the reissue style guitars used the P90. Gibson no longer makes a P100 as far as I know.

There is no such thing as a VOS pickup, whether it be a P90 or a Humbucker! But pickups on VOS guitars have their covers artifically aged. The pickup UNDER the cover is not affected.

The term VOS has caused so much confusion. I wish Gibson had never thought of this marketing campaign.

Other than some contruction details like the backing plate, etc, the basic design of a modern Gibson P90 and a vintage is very, very similar.

What Gibson puts in Epiphones, I have no idea, but it PROBABLY is not the same P90 they put in their USA or Custom Shop guitars.

Re: P90 Reissues

And since the OP is posting in the reissue section and says he is interested in a reissue with P90s, I would ASSUME he means a Custom Shop Historic Reissue verson of a R7 or R8 Junior, R0 Special, R4 or R6 Goldtop reissue, or R4 Custom reissue.

This is the one and only soapbar P90 that Gibson makes (other than Epiphone which is a Asian made pickup) P-90 - Single Coil with Soapbar Cover - Gibson Store

Re: P90 Reissues

P90 (left) vs P100:

I think Gibson stopped making P100s in the late 90s or early 00s.

A Historic reissue route is not deep enough to fit a P100 into.
