Upgrading my Page grovers......again
I just recently changed out the gold grovers that came with my Page custom authentic with a set of USA gold (worn to nickel) grovers. I really liked them but wished there was a little more gold left like the originals. I just picked up a set of gold pat pending grovers that are more like the originals. Now I'm not exactly sure if they are 50's like the eBay ad, but from searching old threads they seem more like 60's. The pics in the old threads were gone so I don't really know. I have some comparision shots of the pat pending grovers with the stock Page ones. Some purists may say that Page only used USA ones, but does anyone know if he EVER used pat pendings?
The washers aren't original as is one of the screws. It's pretty much a drop in mod so I'm not worried about resale value, because I don't plan on ever selling my Page ever! ![]() [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]Page vs. Pat pend [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]Here is the last change I did. Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
I was searching old threads trying to find info on pat pend grovers and I noticed that you were able to score some wicked deals on those grovers. Some go for outrageous prices. One guy wants $700 for his set!!!!

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
Hey, what is the difference between the pat pendings where it is written on the outer circumference of the circle versus the ones which the words are set in closer to the center?

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
OP if the new ones are a drop in replacement then resale won't be an issue if you retain the old set to reinstall later anyway. ie a reversible mod!

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
Yeah, I wouldnt have done it I had to ream the holes. I definitely am keeping all the stock parts. The grovers dropped in perfectly.

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
So let me get this straight....these just pop in using one of the existing screw holes, and there is no reaming the post hole?

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
Dropped right in. Even the screw hole lines up. Zero reaming. But keep in mind it was already drilled for grovers. My classic had klusons and I had to ream the holes to out fit grovers.

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
Here are some various versions of USA Grovers. The Pat Pend around the circumference version is not pictured. But post #8 has those pictured above.

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
There is also another version that is bigger and bulkier. It has a flat (rather than convex) back. It comes in Pat Pend and Star versions. Gibson never put them on Les Pauls from the factory.

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
Thanks for the pics Skatter. I think vintage grovers are still a relatively inexpensive upgrade that really changes the looks alot vs other mods.

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
My ideal set was a gold, worn to nickel set of USA Grovers to make my Page more period correct. Couldnt find those( my USA's were too shiny nickel) so I went a little further back in time for the Pat pend's.

Re: Upgrading my Page grovers......again
Period appropriate for 1950's Les Pauls would be this example of Grover. Notice the end cap that covers the opposite end of the key. Later models from the early 60's have the black machine mechanism exposed. All pat pend Grovers bring big bucks, but these are the most desirable.
