My replacement R8

I don't have the original R8 anymore, GC never could "find" the COA and other paperwork for that guitar. So they said they'd order me one and I could bring mine back and swap it for another one that had all the documentation, problem was they didn't have another one at that time.

Anyway, they first told me they could get the COA from Gibson, don't worry it's just take a few days... then it was a few weeks. Then they said they can't get one at all without sending the guitar back to Gibson but I didn't feel like dealing with that unless they couldn't get me a replacement I liked.

I got a call last week and they said it was in so I picked it up and while the top isn't as figured as the first one, it sounds and plays every bit as good and the edge binding is clear with no red bleeding which the first one had but I thought I was OK with it. So now I finally have a new R8 with all the paperwork and nice clear bindings and a decent backside too.

Here's a few pics I shot today outside.

I never saw the first one, but that is one hot guitar!
(Is it normal to G.A.S. for a R8 when you already have one? )

Hi there...

wow... stumming... looks killer...

...but I doubt that you can avoid bleeding when you play it regulary... and what is bad with the bleeding?... I learned here and elsewhere that even the original old ones did it...

Congrats to this wonderful (and obviously sounding) guitar...

Re: My replacement R8

Thanks guys, yes it's a nice top and back. Plays well, man you just gotta love that PLEKK machine. The action and innotation is spot on with 0.010's.

The finish is VOS, not gloss. I just buffed lightly the body with some guitar polish and buffed the chrome to get that smudgy VOS crap off it. I left the pups covers (nickel plated) unpolished, it looks cool like that to me.

Having a good camera helps too. I shoot with a Canon EOS 30D DSLR with some nice Canon lenses.

Here's a full body shot:

Here's a close up of the left top showing nice symmetrical grain and figure.

This finish seems a little brighter, maybe more yellow in the center than the first one. I like it!

Re: My replacement R8

I was about to say that, but my post crapped out: I like the grain on the edges as it seems to follow the curve of the body and is symmetrical.

I like the left side figure. Congrats on another beauty!

The new COA's are nice - I like that they come in a little book that fits in the case.

very nice , I dont know why they use parallel grain around the knobs & football grain on the other half in a lot of there tops I sent 1 back cause it was way to noticeable ,they should use parallel grain like they did with yours ,Im mean for the money they cost, mine has that problem but not as bad as the 1 I sent back

This is the new one, the avatar photo was of my old R8 with the blanket, it had a different figure, still flat sawn but I think these lines that follow the shape of the body are very cool. And I think the red outer burst has a more attractive pattern than the other R8 had.

let me post two of them together here for comparison:

My original R8 that is on my avatar:

Might be the nicest R8 I ever saw! The rosewood almost looks like ebony. Great to hear it was set up well for you.

Re: My replacement R8

Yes, that one with the Les Paul and wagon wheel leaning against the aged brick with some shadows around the edge is a sweet pic. I gotta get just the right lighting to recapture composition with the new guitar so for now here's another pic of the new R8 I had done with the other one, think this one does look better than the first too.

Here's this weeks desktop photo, the fretboard on this one is really dark, almost like my custom w/ebony:

Re: My replacement R8

You returned a guitar because it didn't have a piece of paper from Gibson stating that it is, indeed, a guitar?

That is correct... the COA stamped from Gibson is part of the Gibson Historic package and I did not get a complete package as promised by GC, I didn't want to send it back to Gibson for 3 weeks to re-certify it and issue a new certificate, so I had GC get me another one. If that seems funny I'd hate to see what makes you angry...

It's still funny. What good is the certificate? I have a couple of extras lying around. They do me no good when I play.
