New Gibson 1958 Goldtop Murphy Aged model...

The GC limited run of 58 Goldtop Murphy's are in the latest mailer (page G07) and all selling for $5500. These look pretty cool. Anybody tried one or know anything about 'em?

I'm not much in to Murphy, but is there a link to an online ad? I don't receive the catalog...

They have one at my local GC. Doesn't look aged from 8 ft away (it's hanging high up).

I like 'em Mikey!

I haven't seen one in real life before....but I will.

I think Gold Tops might be my favorite aged guitar.

Re: New Gibson 1958 Goldtop Murphy Aged model...

Im not a big fan of Murpheys. To much $$ for something I could get free! . I wanna put some real aging on my R9 when I get it. Dont know when thats gonna be though. Whever I get the cash.

Anyways, Im young, so I have plenty of time for natural aging. (Knock on wood)

But whats so special about a '58 GT. Its just a '57, with a different year of production.

And BTW, werent there more GT's made in '58 than bursts? Gibson says the opposite.

I agree with you there, if I wanted an aged guitar, it would be a Gold Top.

I dont know why, they just look awesome naturally aged.

I think you can sign up on the GuitarCenter.com website or when you make a purchase in a store and they ask for your email address.

I think it'd be interesting to see how this Murphy goldtop compares with a HM A-Package goldtop. Dave's getting close to finishing up some more goldtops, and everyone of his that I've seen in person are just devastating.

Re: New Gibson 1958 Goldtop Murphy Aged model...

for the price, no question, get a nice used R8, shoot it to HM for the full deal aged goldtop, you'll come out cheaper and way, way further ahead.

Currently, I don't think a Murphy holds a candle to Dave's work.

But thats apples to oranges. How many guitars does Murphy do, compared to Dave? And what are the parameters Murphy has to work with; Finish, components, time, all contribute to how "off" his aged guitars are compared to those produced by Dave.

Not only that, but how anal is Tom about hitting the nail on the head? From the looks of it, that's something Dave takes quite seriously.

If Murphy was running the same show as Dave, we might see some simialar end results, but thats not the case. And as it stands, Dave's work is at completely different level.

If one can't discern the difference between a Murphy and Johnson finish, then they need to educate themselves more before dropping the coin.

I hate to use analogies, but its like a good scotch;
A scotch drinker can appreciate a good single malt, and can tell you if he/she dislikes or prefers a somewhat smooth and very rich scotch, or one without much peat or smoke, or vice-versa. And on the same token can appreciate the heafty price tag that comes with it.

A non-drinker takes a sip and either likes it or hates it, but can't understand why you'd pay so much for it.

Now take an in the middle novice, let him/her sample both, a cheap bottle and a good 18 year old. They don't have to be a pro to tell you wich one is better....

But try and explain that to them without first having let them sip from each....

I agree Dave does some nice work. I think Murphy did a good job on the Dickey Betts ultra aged guitars.

He told he me last week that he was getting pretty close to finishing a late 60's GT. Cool, mang. I need to run up there this week and check on the status of my re-fin; maybe shove a beer down his neck.

Nice, DJ definitely has the color down, unlike newer Goldtops...and the Dickey Betts pic I just posted.

And that checking is superb

The ads is incorrect in stating the goldtop 58's are rarer than the burst 58. The gold tops were the majority of the production in 58, flametop 58's are even rarer.

Big John...I highly doubt that one is mine...he just got mine a week ago and we still have to go over some of the details as to what's going to be done other than a proper refin.
