Which of these CAB rings do you prefer? (photos)

Which set of rings do you think looks best on this guitar? I feel like one is too dark and the other too light. :/

These (A)...

or these (B)?

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pix and lack of PG! They really are awful photos.

EDIT: Added new photos to A.

Just get a darker poker chip to match the darker rings.

Hi Buddy !
The Choice is yours that make things better for you. If you are asking, B is more professional. But nothing like it before, they likes to be old beatern look alike. But once before, the choice is yours would be better. Thank you for the point.

On your guitar the lighter ones look far better. Just remember that the darker more yellow rings will never get lighter, and you can always make the lighter ones darker.

Ya, I was thinking about trying to darken the lighter rings, but as the guitar's finish is un-aged I wasn't sure how to do it in a way that will look natural for this guitar. Any tips from the home aging master, Nico?

I think B would look better if you swapped out the inlays- otherwise, and aged version of A.

B, and a darker pokerchip, matches your binding nicer.

Re: Which of these CAB rings do you prefer? (photos)

I added some better quality photos of rings A installed.

Swap inlays, huh? Who's inlays would look good on this? The guitar isn't aged at all - I'm going for NOS since I can't crack the finish.

Retrospec Inlays look amazing, but others have great inlay too.

Re: Which of these CAB rings do you prefer? (photos)

I think I'd have to see the inlays in person to fully appreciate the 3D depth.

Is the general idea that the aftermarket ones are more brown/yellow and less blue/MOP looking or is it the swirl pattern and potential to shrink? I'm not so worried about shrinkage in the case of an un-aged replica.

Maybe someone will have some at the Philly show I can check out next month.

If you can, buy 2 or 3 sets of inlays, it is a lot of fun picking the best ones out of the 3 sets.

Good call! Maybe I can score a "group deal" and sell the other two sets off when I'm done.

Yes, its a lot of fun because this inlays work both ways, you can flip them is one side is not working for you and find just the right one.

Re: Which of these CAB rings do you prefer? (photos)

So my question is what is it with having all your plastic match in color? They tend not to match on vintage Les Pauls. Some of the plastic is CAB and some is ABS. I understand that even the neck binding is one and the body binding is the other (I have forgotten which is which) I want my plastic to compliment each other, but not necessarily match. Some whiter, some creamier, some yellower, etc, just as long as it is not PINK!

Re: Which of these CAB rings do you prefer? (photos)

I fully agree with you, Skatter. I don't want it all to match, just complement as you said and look "correct-ish" for a vintage LP in mostly unplayed condition.

Generally, I like the rings to be lighter than the guard and the pokerchip can be close to the rings but vary a little either way.

I agree. And I think when it matches, it looks more like the Les Paul copies than an original.

too bad the BOTB book cant help out with the different colors in plastics, its too over exposed.

burstserial.com is of better help, and many burst have matching plastics except for the PG.

Yeah but even if it was proven that the originals were cream, I'd still go bone white. It just pops.

Yup. I'm with Skatts. The plastics never match on the great old ones - and when it does match on the new ones, it looks ridiculous! Once you've an eye for the old ones, anyway. Which is an unfortunately very expensive eye to develop.

I think the white ones look really great on that lovely guitar. The colour of the whole guitar looks sharper and deeper - could just be the photos, but that's what I think, regardless.

I wouldn't mind knowing what kind of rings those white ones are. They look way better than the stock rings on my guitar, no question!

I respectfully disagree with your use of the word "never", there is plenty of matching plastics on real bursts in the burstserial.com site
