WOW!,All these new Historics.

I was just in The House of Guitars and a bunch of Gibson Les Paul Historics came in.I'm amazed at all the variations that are out at the same time. They have quilt tops, the chambered 58's,figured 58's and 57's,R8 Stinger and a bunch of 59's.
Is 2011 going to be a stand out year? I think the past 3 years have been the best years for Historic Les Pauls.I like to give a shout out to the people at Gibson for a job well done.
I have bought 4 historics in the past 6 months alone.
Cheers to Gibson!!

Don't know exactly. It has some different features that are cool and puzzling.
First thing was how light it was and the neck was in between a R9 and R0 and the frets were flat on top.It had a bone nut also.

It sounded different also the pickups have a more "tunk" and vowel vocal like sound to them.Hard to explain.Top on this one looked vintage and faded.Depending on angle plain top to deep figure.Wish I brought my camera. It was a VOS finish but different as it had rust on the hard ware.
Maybe some one can chime in on what these 2011 Stingers are.

From what I heard, those were made as BB R9's first, then they painted the back of headstock to put on R8 serial and sold as R8.

Re: WOW!,All these new Historics.

I don't know the story on new ones but originally stingers were done to hide minor cosmetic defects on the headstock. The defects wouldn't show up in the raw stock & appeared after the wood had been cut and shaped.

I think that alot of these Historics being shipped to stores now are pieces that were made for Japan and because of all the problems going on there. The orders were cancelled. The tops and wood on some of these pieces are jawdropping to say the least. The Stinger is most likely one of these.

Just one example of this.I don't think that they would put a 3D Figured flame over a Blister top on a Darkback R7 normally.

But its just a thought.........maybe I'm way off base.

Thanks for posting My guitar. I love it. Great guitar that one.
The story with the New Stingers is, from what I recall. Gibson and GC
were going to do a special run and had stamped a numbered or something on the back to indicate it. The deal went south so Gibson repainted the guitars with the Stingers so they could still sell them. Gibson has used Stingers since the 50's , on their high end Jazz guitars. They also put Stingers on some guitars to hide flaws in the wood, It was used as a cosmetic repair.
In 2003 Music Machine and Gibson produced a run of 500 guitars, that had stingers on them. Of these the Les Pauls used BRW on the Fretboard.(Sweet). Hope that helps.
This is the front of the Stinger used in the above photo.

Re: WOW!,All these new Historics.

The one you are talking about is a 2011?..... Must be something new from Gibson......I bought the next to the last one available yesterday at GC......
One left in Atlanta.....These last ones were built in 2010......They were painted Stingers because Gibson went over the quantity of the GC order for the original 30 and had to do something with the 20 to 30 or so extra's..... GC called them R8 Stingers and are the same as the Burst Bro.......About $1600 less monoply funny money...... Just the serial number and black stinger paint on the back of headstock the only difference......Same color and custom wound pups. Same R9 neck specs......Mine has the Nylon 6/6 Nut......

I don't think they are the same as GC ones, you said the place was in N.Y.
named H.O.G......They are not affiliated with GC are they?......Maybe they did come back from Japan and did the same thing (Stingers) for that store.....

Heard they are Brazilian......Not......LOL.....

Here's another example of a 2011 Stinger R8.
Great looking top, nice dark fretboard.
The description on the site is wrong so I don't know if this guitar has the custom wound pups.
But THOMANN always shows pictures of the actual guitar for sale.
The guitar you see is the guitar you get.

Interesting!
The one I posted above has Grover tuners.
So there must be different stories to the Stinger guitars.

What's the weight on yours?
I've noticed that all Stinger are light weight around 8.5 pounds.

2011 R8 Stingers don't have the custom wound pu that B9 have.
I have both and Stingers have regular burst buckers.

The area where the R8 stamp is has been chipped out and restamped. Its the only part of the guitar that does not have a finish on it. It has a '59 neck that has the shoulders softened.Very much like the Moore /Franks Les Paul.
