Inexpensive Upgrade For Historics
Gibson Historics have become more and more historically accurate over the last couple of years. One thing they have failled to get even close to correct is the shape of the pickup covers. I purchased some Late 1950s PAF shape covers from Stew Mac just to see how good they look. They are not perfect, but I think they look pretty good. What do you guys think?
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They are not as accurate as the new Throbak MXV covers, which I like best, but for less than sixteen bucks each they are a big upgrade over the Gibby covers. Yes, that's a lefty. |

Re: Inexpensive Upgrade For Historics
Not to pee on your party my friend but StewMac cover where never in my list because they are not even close to the shape and plating of the 50īs covers.
There are really just 3 options to take in, DMC, Throbak and OTPG covers, the rest gets close but don't detail them as much as this guys, IMO anyways. |

I put them on my LP Standard's pups. I have a set of Throbak SLE-101 MXV Limiteds that will going in my R8 once it arrives. I still think those Stew Mac covers are way better than Gibson Covers. I think you are wise to wait, and get the good stuff. |

Re: Inexpensive Upgrade For Historics
You could get the TV Jones 58 PAF covers 14.00 apiece but, unplated only. Throbak, Stephens and a bunch of other winders, have used them. I've heard you can buff the crap out of them, to get them to shine. Me, I'm too Lazy. I still have unplated DMC covers from 8 years ago, that I half assed tried to shine and gave up! I think there the first version, very similiar to the Tom Holmes covers I used to have, in that they were really squared and a tad smaller than the newer versions.

Re: Inexpensive Upgrade For Historics
Agreed. All I was really trying to say when I started this thread is these (inexpensive) covers look much better than the stock Gibby ones. For the guy who just blew his budget on a new Historic, but can't stand the look of the stock covers these could be an option.
Yeah, I know, but that's actually a '07 LP Standard you are looking at. The pickguard came with the guitar, but was not on it when I got it. I was told it was a Gibson guard, but I think it may be an aftermarket PG. It looks like it could of come from WD to me? I changed all the plastic parts, and the PG fit properly and the color matched up with the new stuff. We lefties don't have as many options when it comes to pickguards, and it is 'just' a LP Standard.... historical accuracy is not really that important. It plays great, and has a nice top at least... |
