What is it about Historics?

So I've been working on this 1 blues riff for what seems like weeks...OK it has been weeks. I've played it on literally 4 different guitars and struggled with it on all of them. So I pull out the G0 and plug it in this afternoon. BANG! The same @#$*&^% riff just flows off my fingers onto the fretboard and through the amp...almost effortless! I try it again...same thing! Every time...whatever Gibson does with these things it's f'n magic as far as I'm concerned.

I know Historics are expensive but damn...they're worth it!

Yes they are...mine plays like a dream, and is why I couldn't stop going to the shop to play it over and over again until I took it home.

Re: What is it about Historics?

Happy for ya, Bill, srsly.

I know what it is about mine, for me. But sometimes, I get "it" elsewhere. Which proves to me it's not the pots, caps, pickups, finish, board, or anything I can nail down. It's the whole package. And also explains why I'm up to nine quite-different guitars, none of which I can even consider letting go!

As coincidence would have it, today's an R8 day. So I'm on the same wavelength. I went and put new strings on her this afternoon, and holy jumping toaster cakes! I can do no wrong.

Dunno how I'd go about posting a tab to the forum. I have it in a .pdf but it's 3 pages long.

Re: What is it about Historics?

I know what you mean, but then again its all about how a guitar is set up, non of my guitars came exactly how i like them, i really spend a lot of time tweaking the neck and bridge and saddles just right for me and i can say that all my guitars play exactly as i want them.

Me too. I was lowering the action on my R8 when Bill posted this. Nonetheless, there's something special about a beloved Historic. Sometimes I prefer vintage, other times funky, but I'm going through one of my Historic periods at present.

Re: What is it about Historics?

it's because they cost more. A well known psychologist did a research study that proved the brain releases more endorphins when you pay higher prices for an item that in reality is worth much less. It's a natural safety mechanism in the brain that protects you from feeling like an idiot when you get ripped off. Or maybe it's the good wood. (This should be in purple.)

Re: What is it about Historics?

There is just "something" about them. I have owned over 20 les pauls (16 USA 4 historics) and maybe its the neck shape?, tone? I really dont know but I consider myself a capable and decent player and I am able to play with more precision and fluidity on my historics. I too can never go back to standards or classics, but I was playing my firebird today which is USA, and was fine with it. Different animal, thinner neck but I was O.K. with that just not USA Les Pauls. Easy Ace I never tire of seeing you R6. ROCK ON DUDE!!

Ya know, I doubt I'll ever have but the one. Not because I appreciate them any less than anyone else, though. I just appreciate variety even more.

In fact, I think I'm going to work on Bill's tab on my Tele...

Another well know psychologist did a research study that proved a large increase of endorphins when a subject bashes an historical guitar.

It's, of course, a natural safety mechanism located deep into the brain that protect these subjects from feeling ,after all, they have bribed a cheap guitar compared to an historical.

As an idiot i love Norlins, historics, signatures and some Gibson USA Sg.

As an idiot, to protect myself, i use to play sometimes a few cheap, woodpressed guitars. So when i back to the historic, or Norlin, i get my daily endorphins dosage.

there is certainly a component of psychology involved. however, while not statistically significant, I have experienced Historics that sounded like poop compared to USA LPs on the same rack. the only thing i can come up with is that the good historics will sound better than the good USAs. placebo effect? quite possibly.

i will also add that my wife could hear the difference when i bought my R8. i figured the difference was in my head, but she actually stopped txting and said "if you're going to buy a guitar tonight, buy that one. it sounds way better than 50 you've played so far."

Re: What is it about Historics?

When I picked out my R9, I had to go through at least 15-20 to find a great one, they were all, for the most part, OK, but not GREAT. Of all of the shops I visited, there was only one that understood why I didn't want to play it through an amp....lol
